Part seven

Felix didn’t stop until the city thinned out.

The glow of streetlights gave way to scattered lamps and long stretches of shadow, the river eventually curving out of sight behind him. His pulse was still high, adrenaline slow to drain, every passing sound sharpened into something suspicious. A car engine in the distance. Wind catching loose metal. Footsteps that weren’t there.

Only when silence settled properly did he slow.

“You’re still with me?” he asked, quieter now.

A brief pause. Then Hyunjin’s voice, softer than it had been since the shooting started.

“I haven’t gone anywhere.”

Felix let out a breath that almost sounded like a laugh. “Could’ve fooled me.”

“I meant what I said,” Hyunjin replied. “Back there.”

Felix leaned against a cold concrete barrier, phone pressed closer to his ear. “About what?”

“Not knowing how to stop,” Hyunjin said. “Using people. Calculating outcomes. Treating everything like a test.”

Felix didn’t answer immediately. His eyes tracked the empty road ahead, but he wasn’t really seeing it.

“You’re good at it,” he said finally.

“That doesn’t make it right.”

“No,” Felix agreed. “It doesn’t.”

Silence slipped in again—but this time it wasn’t sharp or tense. Just… present.

Hyunjin spoke first.

“I watched you choose,” he said. “Even when it made things harder for you. Even when it put you at risk.”

Felix’s grip on the phone tightened slightly. “Don’t turn me into something I’m not.”

“I’m not,” Hyunjin said. “I’m trying to understand why you’re not like me.”

Felix pushed himself off the barrier and started walking again, slower now. No clear direction. Just movement.

“Maybe I am,” he said. “Just not all the way.”

Another pause.

Then, more quietly—

“You could’ve let them corner you,” Hyunjin added. “Played along. Learned more. Stayed safe longer.”

Felix huffed. “That doesn’t sound like staying safe.”

“It is,” Hyunjin said. “In my world.”

Felix shook his head, even though Hyunjin couldn’t see it. “Yeah. Well. Your world nearly got me killed.”

A beat.

“I know.”

There was something different in the way he said it this time. Not distant. Not analytical.

Personal.

Felix noticed.

“You don’t like that,” he said slowly.

“No.”

“Why?”

The line went quiet long enough that Felix almost thought the call had dropped.

Then—

“Because it mattered,” Hyunjin said.

Simple. Direct.

And somehow heavier than anything else he’d said that night.

Felix stopped walking.

“…what did?”

“You.”

The word hung there.

No strategy. No calculation behind it. Just truth, laid out without defense.

Felix exhaled slowly, his chest tightening in a way that had nothing to do with running or fear.

“That’s new,” he said, but his voice had lost its edge.

“Yes.”

Felix dragged a hand through his hair, looking down at the ground like it might help him process something that didn’t fit into anything familiar.

“You don’t even know me,” he said.

“I know enough.”

“That’s not how this works.”

“It is now.”

Felix let out a quiet, incredulous breath. “You’re unbelievable.”

“I’ve been called worse.”

A flicker of a smile touched Felix’s lips despite everything.

It faded quickly—but it had been there.

“Where are you?” Felix asked after a moment.

Another pause.

“Close,” Hyunjin said.

Felix frowned slightly. “That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I can give you.”

“That sounds like a warning.”

“It is.”

Felix’s instincts sharpened again—but not in the same way as before. Not danger exactly.

Something else.

“Why?” he asked.

This time, Hyunjin didn’t hesitate.

“Because if they’re tracking you,” he said, “they’re listening for me too.”

Felix’s gaze flicked around his surroundings. Empty road. Quiet buildings. No movement.

“They will be,” Hyunjin added. “Soon.”

“Then hang up,” Felix said immediately.

“No.”

“Hyunjin—”

“I’m not leaving you alone in this.”

The certainty in his voice cut through everything else.

Felix swallowed.

“You don’t get to decide that.”

“I already did.”

Silence again.

But it wasn’t uncomfortable.

It was something else now—something steady, threading between them even without sight, without proximity. Something that had built itself quietly through danger and choices and words that meant more than they should.

Felix closed his eyes for a second.

“…you’re making this complicated,” he muttered.

“I think it already is.”

Felix let out a quiet breath. “Yeah.”

A faint sound broke through the night then—distant at first. Engines.

More than one.

Felix’s eyes snapped open.

“They found me,” he said.

“I know.”

Of course he did.

Felix turned, scanning for cover, for exits, for anything that gave him an advantage.

“There’s nowhere good,” he said under his breath.

“No,” Hyunjin agreed.

A beat.

Then—

“There’s me.”

Felix stilled.

“What does that mean?”

Footsteps. Not behind him.

Ahead.

Out of the darkness, a figure emerged—familiar in a way that made something in Felix’s chest tighten instantly, even before his mind fully caught up.

Phone still pressed to his ear, Felix stared.

“…Hyunjin?”

The man lowered his own phone slowly.

Same voice. Same presence. Real.

Closer than Felix had expected.

Closer than he should have been.

“They’ll be here in less than a minute,” Hyunjin said, no longer filtered through a call. “Maybe less.”

Felix’s brain struggled to catch up. “You said you were close—”

“I lied,” Hyunjin said simply. “I was already here.”

Engines grew louder.

Headlights flickered in the distance.

Felix took a step toward him without thinking. “Why?”

Hyunjin met his gaze, something unguarded finally breaking through all the control he usually held so tightly.

“Because leaving wasn’t an option anymore.”

Felix let out a shaky breath. “That’s not how survival works.”

“No,” Hyunjin agreed. “It isn’t.”

Another step closer.

Between them now, barely any space left.

“But you told me to learn,” Hyunjin added quietly. “So I am.”

The weight of that hit harder than anything before.

Felix searched his face—looking for calculation, for manipulation, for anything that would make this make sense in the old way.

There was none.

Just him.

Just truth.

The engines were close now. Too close.

No more time.

“We don’t win this,” Felix said.

“I know.”

“We don’t outrun them either.”

“I know.”

Felix’s breath caught slightly. “Then what are we doing?”

Hyunjin didn’t look away.

“Choosing.”

The word settled between them—familiar now.

Intentional.

Felix let out a quiet, almost disbelieving laugh. “You really picked the worst moment to become honest.”

“Timing has never been my strength.”

Despite everything, Felix smiled.

Small. Real.

“Yeah,” he said softly. “I noticed.”

The first car turned the corner.

Light spilled across the street.

No more shadows to hide in.

Felix didn’t look away from Hyunjin.

“Still time to walk away,” he said.

“No,” Hyunjin replied.

Felix held his gaze for a second longer.

Then—

“Okay.”

It wasn’t surrender.

It was agreement.

Hyunjin stepped closer, closing the last inch of distance, his hand catching Felix’s wrist—firm, grounding, real.

For a moment, the world narrowed to that point of contact.

To breath.

To presence.

To choice.

Then—

They moved.

Not away.

Not toward the incoming cars.

But sideways—into the narrow gap between buildings Felix hadn’t even registered before.

Hidden.

Temporary.

Enough.

The noise swallowed the street behind them—shouts, doors slamming, footsteps scattering—but by the time anyone reached the spot where they’d stood seconds ago, there was nothing there.

No trace.

No direction.

Just absence.

By morning, there would be reports.

Of a failed containment.

Of two targets lost.

Of a detective who disappeared without a body.

And something more dangerous—

Of a ghost who had stepped out of the shadows and vanished again.

Together.

No one would know where they went.

No one would find them.

Only the quiet certainty left behind in the space they’d abandoned—

That whatever came next…

They had chosen it.

And they hadn’t chosen it alone.

End.
