Part six
Darkness hit like a physical thing—thick, immediate, absolute.
For half a second, no one moved.
Then everything did at once.
A flash—muzzle fire from the far end. Not aimed to kill. A test shot. A probe.
Felix dropped low on instinct, shoulder hitting the wall as he slid sideways toward the nearest doorway. His own gun came up, but he didn’t fire. Not yet. Not blind.
His heartbeat counted the space for him. One. Two. Three.
Footsteps split—one left, one right. They were trying to flank.
“They’re herding you,” Hyunjin’s voice came through the phone, low and controlled now, the earlier softness gone. “Don’t let them box you in. Two ahead, one hanging back.”
Felix didn’t ask how he knew.
He trusted it.
Felix moved.
He pushed off the wall and cut right instead of retreating, closing distance fast. Surprise was still his only advantage. Another flash—this time closer. The man on the right.
Felix fired once.
A grunt. Not fatal. Enough.
He kept moving.
“Good,” Hyunjin murmured. “Don’t stop. If you slow down, they take control.”
“I’ve noticed,” Felix shot back under his breath.
The hallway opened into a wider space—an old operations floor. Cubicles stripped to metal skeletons. Plenty of cover. Too much, maybe.
Felix ducked behind a support column just as another shot cracked past, splintering concrete where his head had been a second earlier.
“They’re not aiming to kill,” Felix said.
“No,” Hyunjin replied. “They’re evaluating.”
Felix’s mouth twisted. “Hate that.”
Silence stretched for a beat. Then—
“They’ll push you toward the exit on the east side,” Hyunjin said. “That’s where they have the cleanest line of sight. Cameras, maybe thermal. They want data.”
Felix risked a glance. Movement between the cubicle frames. Controlled. Patient.
Hunters, like he’d thought.
“Then I don’t go east.”
A pause.
“Good,” Hyunjin said again, quieter.
Felix shifted, scanning for another route. His eyes caught a flicker—faint red near the ceiling. Emergency system. Still powered.
“Power’s live,” he muttered.
“Yes.”
Felix’s mind clicked into place. “So is the fire suppression.”
Another beat of silence. Then, something like approval:
“You’re learning.”
Felix moved fast.
He broke from cover and sprinted low across the open floor. Shots followed—closer now, sharper—but rushed. He slid behind a wall panel near what used to be a control station and ripped it open with the butt of his gun.
Wires. Old switches. Labels half-peeled.
Come on—
“There,” Hyunjin said suddenly. “Bottom left. Manual override.”
Felix didn’t hesitate. He slammed it.
For a second, nothing happened.
Then—
A violent hiss.
From the ceiling, a heavy curtain of suppressant foam and mist exploded downward, swallowing the room in choking white. Visibility dropped to nothing.
The hunters lost their clean lines.
Felix didn’t wait.
“West exit?” he asked.
“Service stairwell,” Hyunjin replied instantly. “Ten meters behind you. Door’s heavy—don’t slow down.”
Felix turned blindly and ran.
A shape loomed out of the fog—one of them, closer than expected. Felix reacted without thinking. A sharp pivot, a strike with the gun, bone meeting metal—
The man dropped.
Felix didn’t check if he stayed down.
He hit the stairwell door hard, shoulder slamming into it. It gave with a groan, and he stumbled inside, dragging it shut behind him.
Dark again. But quieter.
For a moment, all he could hear was his own breathing.
Then—
“You’re alive,” Hyunjin said.
Felix let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “You sound surprised.”
“I’m relieved.”
That landed differently.
Felix started down the stairs, steps quick but careful. “You planned this.”
“Yes.”
“You knew they’d be here.”
“Yes.”
Felix’s grip tightened on the phone. “And you still sent me in.”
A pause. Longer this time.
“I needed to know,” Hyunjin said finally.
“Know what?”
“If you would choose them,” he answered. “Or yourself.”
Felix stopped mid-step.
Somewhere above, the door rattled. They’d found the stairwell.
Time was running again.
“You don’t get to test me like that,” Felix said, voice low, controlled but sharp at the edges.
“I know.”
“Do you?” Felix snapped. “Because from where I’m standing, it feels a lot like you’re playing the same game they are.”
Silence.
Heavy. Honest.
Then, quieter than before—
“I don’t know how not to.”
That took the air out of the anger.
Felix closed his eyes for half a second. Then opened them again.
“Then learn,” he said, and started moving.
The bottom door came into view. Rusted. Half-blocked.
“Exit leads to the river side,” Hyunjin said. “Less coverage. But not none.”
Felix pushed through.
Cold night air hit his face, sharp and real. The river stretched dark beside him, city lights fractured across its surface.
Behind him, the building loomed—alive now, no longer forgotten.
“You’re not done with them,” Felix said.
“No,” Hyunjin replied.
Felix stepped away from the building, every sense still on edge. “And they’re not done with me.”
“No.”
Another pause.
Then—
“Felix.”
He didn’t answer right away.
“What you did in there,” Hyunjin continued, voice steadier now, “that wasn’t instinct.”
Felix glanced back once at the building. At the place that had tried to swallow him whole.
“It was a choice,” Hyunjin said.
Felix turned forward again, disappearing into the shadows of the street.
“Yeah,” he said quietly.
“I know.”
