Chapter 4

Warning: strong use of language

-

"Why were you and Daryl eye-fücking?" Jake asked as I got in his truck.

"What? We weren't." I replied.

"Yeah, right." He replied.

"We barely even talk to each other." I replied.

"That doesn't mean anything." He stated.

"Shut up, Jake." I ordered.

"Geez," He mumbled.

"You're staying the night at my place, I'm not letting you drive." I replied as I drove down the dirt road to get to the farm.

"Your family will flip shït." He replied.

"I don't care." I replied.

-

I quietly pulled Jake up the stairs behind me before pushing him into my room.

"Be quiet." I hissed as I shut and locked the door.

Jake pulled his shoes off before pulling his shirt off.

I dug into my drawers and found some old clothes of Blake's that I had stole.

"Here. Get a shower. You reek of weed and alcohol and if my dad or Annette smells it, we're both getting kicked out." I stated.

"You know they've had to smell it on you before. They aren't stupid." He replied.

"Just shut up and get a shower." I ordered.

"Fine." He mumbled.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and put my head in my hands.

"Dani?" Beth asked from outside of my room.

I slowly walked over to the door before opening it.

"Yeah?" I asked.

"Is Maggie doing okay?" She asked.

"Yeah. She gets to come home Friday." I answered.

She smiled before looking into my room.

"Who's with you?" She inquired.

"Jake." I replied.

"Daddy's gonna kill you if he finds out you brought a boy in here." She hissed.

"Don't say a word." I replied.

"I won't." She replied before walking down the hall.

I shut the door and locked it again before sitting on the bed again.

Suddenly the bathroom door opened and Jake stepped out with only a towel around his waist.

"Where's the soap?" He asked.

"On the shelf thing in the shower." I answered, struggling to keep my eyes off of his body.

"I looked," He replied, running his fingers through his wet hair.

I sighed and walked into my bathroom before opening the closet and pulling out a fresh bar of soap.

I turned around to find him right behind me and I nearly bumped into him.

"Here," I mumbled, handing him the bar of soap.

"Thanks." He replied, taking the soap from my hand.

I nodded before locking my eyes with his.

"What?" He asked.

"Nothing." I replied.

"Are you going to take a shower with me or something?" He inquired.

"Oh, no! No, I'm not." I replied, nervously laughing as I left the bathroom.

-

"Did you use all the hot water?" I asked as Jake walked back into my room.

"I don't know." He replied.

I huffed and walked into the bathroom before pulling my shirt off.

I turned to close the door when my eyes caught Jake's and he looked away and smirked.

We've been friends since senior year of high school, but we always fight and argue.

We used to be close, then we went off to college, and started to get close again after Merle found me on the side of the street thanks to Blake.

I turned the lock on the bathroom door before turning the shower on.

-

"Stay on your side, and if you even look to my side of the bed I'll kick you into the floor." I told Jake as I pulled the covers back.

"Be quiet, you're going to get us both caught." He whispered.

"I'm setting the alarm for five and you're going to get out of here before anyone wakes up." I replied.

He nodded his head before laying down beside me.

After setting the alarm clock, I turned over on my back.

"How do I stop dealing with Merle and his guys?" I asked.

"You don't." He mumbled.

"Do you want to?" I inquired.

"I'm too far gone." He replied, looking at me.

"No you aren't." I replied.

"You know their rules. If you choose to stop, they turn you in and that's when your life is really ruined." He replied.

"You should stop doing the drugs." I mumbled.

"Can't." He muttered.

"You can. I don't want to wake up one day and see your name and face in the obituary for overdose." I replied.

"No one cares." He replied.

"I care. You're my friend." I stated.

I nearly jumped out of my bed as he put his hand on top of mine under the sheets.

"I can help you. You can get into a rehab." I stated.

"You can't help everyone, Dani." He whispered.

I took my hand out of his before turning over on my side.

-

I jumped out of my bed, hearing my alarm going off.

Jake fell out of my bed and onto the floor before standing up.

"Go. I'll call you later." I replied.

I followed him downstairs to make sure no one was up before he walked outside and got in his truck.

-

"You weren't at breakfast," My father stated as he walked into our veterinarian office.

"I got up early so I thought I'd just come on in and get some things done." I replied.

He gave me a smile before patients started coming in.

I watched as Annette sat down at the front desk and my eyes nearly bulged out of my head as Jake walked in.

I quickly walked to the back before Annette called my name.

I mentally cursed before walking back out to the front.

"Danielle, this sweet boy bought you breakfast." Annette stated.

She looked at me and winked before standing up and walked toward the files.

"Hey," Jake greeted with a smile.

"Hi." I replied.

"I bought you some breakfast as a thank you for last night." He replied, handing me a bag of Dunkin Donuts and an iced coffee.

"Oh, thanks. You didn't have to do that." I replied, taking the bag from his hand.

"I kinda did." He stated.

"Did you put anything in it?" I joked.

He laughed and shook his head before smiling.

I smiled and sat the bag on the desk before he ran his fingers through his hair.

"I like your hair like that," He replied before smirking and walking toward the door.

I furrowed my eyebrows, not used to his compliments.

"Such a cutie." Annette stated before sitting down again.

I opened the bag to find a donut before I took my breakfast to my office.

I sat my donut on my desk before walking back out of my office and sipping on my coffee.

-

I walked into the bar, country music blaring, people dancing, drinking, and sucking each others faces off.

I walked up to the bar and was greeted by a bar tender.

"What can I get ya?" She asked.

After telling her, someone sat down beside me.

"We meet again." Rick slurred.

"And I think you're drunk." I replied, finding the situation amusing.

After a few minutes, I became tipsy and was close to getting more drunk than I had planned on.

"So what is a married man and father doing here?" I asked.

"Nope. Not married. Well I am, but we're getting a divorce." He replied, holding his hand up and showing that his wedding ring was gone.

"Relationships are overrated." I slurred.

I almost cheered when another round of drinks came.

"How drunk are you?" He asked.

"Drunk enough to not care that I have work in the morning." I replied.

"I'm drunk enough to kiss you and not care what my wife thinks." He replied.

I smirked and downed another shot.

I was about to say something else when he crashed his lips to mine.

I kissed back with just as much force before pulling away.

"Who's calling the cab?" He asked, smirking.

"You're too drunk. You'd end up calling your wife." I slurred.

He laughed and the bar tender walked over.

"Wait outside. I'll call the cab." She stated.

-

I woke up, finding Rick laying beside me.

I slowly raised the sheet up, finding that I was naked.

I put a hand on my forehead and tried not to freak out.

I looked over to the clock, finding that it was six in the morning.

I slowly pulled the covers off of me before standing up from the bed and began searching for my clothes.

I pulled my clothes on and threw my hair up into a ponytail before leaving his hotel room.

"I'm so stupid." I hissed as I hit the elevator button.

My head was hurting so bad I could barely think, and I didn't even know how to get out of the damn hotel.

-

I walked into my home, finding everyone eating breakfast.

"Where were you?" Beth asked.

"Um, I was at a hotel. I wanted to get some peace and quiet and just try to deal with everything. Just get away for a while, you know?" I lied.

Annette gave me a weird look as I walked up the stairs and into the bathroom to get a shower.

-

It didn't matter how much concealer I used, you could still see the dark circles under my eyes.

I put two coats of mascara on my lashes before throwing my damp hair into a top knot bun on my head.

I ran down the stairs and grabbed my phone and keys before walking outside to my car to get to work on time.

It doesn't matter that my father is my boss, because he's just as strict on me as the other employees.

At work, he's not my father- he's my boss.

I sped down the highway and got to work in under ten minutes.

-

I walked into one of the patient rooms where we do our evaluation and to inform the owners, only to find Rick.

"Dr. Greene, this is Max and he's getting neutered today." One of the nurses stated.

Rick's eyes widened once he saw me before he quickly looked away and I looked to the dog.

I flinched, the German Shepherd barking at me.

"Okay, thanks." I mumbled after the nurse handed me the file and left the room.

I awkwardly cleared my throat and pet the pup on the head before setting the file down on the counter.

"I didn't know you worked here." Rick stated.

"Yup." I mumbled as I glanced at the file.

"It was just sex. This is awkward because we're making it awkward." He replied.

"Yeah. Just sex." I replied.

He nodded before I walked over to the light switched and turned it off and only left the light coming in the small window.

"Thank God," He muttered.

"Your hangover as bad as mine?" I asked.

He nodded his head before pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Okay, so it's a simple procedure and you'll be able to pick Max up at four-thirty today. The surgery itself just takes around an hour, but we allow eight hours to monitor them before you can take them home if they have no complications." I explained.

"Okay, I'll be here then." He replied, standing up.

"How's your son?" I asked.

"I'm going there now. I took a day off of work to spend the day with him since Lori has to work." He answered.

I pet the dog before closing the file.

"How's your sister?" He inquired.

"Good. She gets to come home tomorrow." I replied.

"By the way," He continued as he walked toward the door.

"What?" I asked.

"I don't regret it." He replied.

I quickly opened the door to be met by Annette.

"Annette, can you show Rick the way to the front? These hallways get confusing." I stated as I walked off and pulled my reading glasses off.
