nineteen

"It's not polite to ignore a girl after you take her on a date," I smiled as I stood with my back against the locker next to Ashton's.

"I'm not ignoring you, and that wasn't a date."

"You said it yourself, our date ended in a kiss," I chuckled. "A very good one if I may add." He smirked at me which gave me the impression that he defiantly agreed.

"Fine, it was a date," he groaned. I watched him grab his things from his locker, we walked into Mr. Collins' room and took a seat in the back of the classroom. He pulled a huge stack of homework out of his bag and put it at the edge of his desk.

"So, you're first day back is off to a good start huh?"

"Yeah I think I'll be alright," he mumbled. The two of us were interrupted when we noticed Amber. I watched her walk into the room and look for Ashton like she always does. She saw me, rolled her eyes and took a seat on the other side of the room and I turned back to Ashton who was looking at Amber as well.

"Maybe my day won't be so great after all."

After school, Ashton and I rode to the hospital in complete silence. I began to think about him and how his mood has been better lately. When we first met, he would burst at any moment, he would be angry for a day or two and then he would suddenly forget about it.

I ignored my thoughts once again and took a glance at him. He seemed to be growing the littlest bit of stubble across his cheeks. His eyes were focused on the road and his hair was slicked back into a bandana like usual. I turned my head and continued to stare out of the window.

We got to the hospital within a few minutes and the two of us got out of his car and started to walk into the building.

Once we were inside, Ashton spoke up.

"I'm gonna go out for a smoke before we go see her, wait here," He said quickly. I watched him walk of the doors with his hands shoved deep into his pockets.

"Shannon!" I heard a voice call for me. I turned around to see Luke.

"Hey," I smiled.

"Hey, why are you here?" He asked.

"I'm coming to check on Ashton's Aunt," I said quickly.

"I heard you were trying to get the hospital to do her surgery for free?" He mumbled. I know he didn't like the idea of Ashton and I being friends but, I think he also knew I was tired of hearing him complain about it.

"Yeah, I think I'm almost out of ideas," I sighed. "Anyways, what did you come here to tell me?"

"You're Dad needed to see you, he sent me," He said quietly. "I've really missed you, but I should go..." He just gave me a quick hug and walked away as soon as he saw Ashton walking inside.

Ashton just glared at Luke as he walked down the hallway. I wondered what the two of them had against each other?

I just shrugged off the thought and made my way towards Ashton.

"Why do you talk to him?" He scoffed. I rolled my eyes.

"He is my best friend," I mumbled as Ashton pressed the button and waited for the elevator. He sighed and turned to face me. The hospital was rather cold and couldn't help but snuggle up into my scarf as Ashton looked at me. I heard his faint voice speak up.

"I have to ask you something-"

We were I interrupted by the sound of the elevator doors opening. I turned my head to see my mother staring at the two of us. I sighed and rolled my eyes.

"I haven't seen you in over a week Shannon, and all you can give me is an eye roll?" she mumbled in frustration. She pushed through the two of us and started walking towards the E.R.

"Your Mom is a bitch," Ashton spoke up as we stepped into the elevator. I leaned up against one of the walls and pressed a button.

"Tell me about it."

-

"Do you really think you can do this Shannon?" I heard Jenna's frail voice speak.

"Well, so far, the tumor hasn't grown but I have a feeling if I don't find a way to do this within a week, we may be out of luck," I said. My voice was strained as I tried to hold back tears of frustration. I had been at this project for weeks. So far, I have made no progress.

I had come up with a few ideas but I really didn't think any of them would work.

Ashton was being patient and waiting for me to come up with and idea on my own, which I really appreciated. But in the end, I was scared that Jenna might have to die knowing there was nothing we could do.

I quickly sat down on a chair next to Jenna and put my head in my hands. I took a deep breath and tried to gather myself.

"Hey, don't worry sweetheart," I felt a soft hand stroke my hair. "You're trying your best."

"Thank you," I said slowly. I suddenly felt an idea flow into my head. I stood up and walked towards the door. "I'm gonna go and figure this out." I smiled. She threw a fist up in the air, as if she was cheering me on. I quickly left the room and smiled at Ashton as he was returning from the cafeteria with some chocolate pudding.

"What's the rush?" He chuckled. I threw a hand in the air and waved away his question.

"I'm gonna save your aunt's life!" I called from behind me.

I made my way to the observation room of one of my Dad's surgeries. He had a few of his best students watching his every move carefully. I took a seat next to them and listened as they talked about the surgery.

"I have a proposal for you guys," I said confidently.

I had one last idea and I was hoping it would work.

At this point, all I could do is try.
