"I have a proposal for you guys," I said confidently. I took a seat next to them on the chairs and looked down at my father, he gave me a glare and went back to his work.
"I need you're help figuring out a way to get a patient a free brain surgery," I sighed. "She has a small, benign tumor and she can't afford the surgery."
They all looked at each other and nodded their heads.
"We'll help," One man said as he stood up to shake my hand. I gripped it firmly and smiled.
"I will see you all after this surgery in the research library."
-
"Ashton, can you please stop looking at me like that?" I mumbled as I read through a book in the research lab. Ashton had been staring at me for a solid three minutes and I was starting to feel uncomfortable.
"Sorry, I'm just starting to loose hope, that's all," his voice cracked. He took a seat on the couch next to me. He put his head in his hands and took a deep breath.
"I think I'm really close to figuring this out Ashton," I said quickly. "I just need you to let me do this."
I placed a hand on his knee and smiled at him. "I know I can't do this Ash, please just believe me." I watched as his eyes slowly made their way to meet mine. His stared at me for a few seconds before speaking up.
"Where is your Dad?" He asked softly.
"In surgery."
"I want to kiss you really bad right now," his voice was soft and delicate. He lightly pushed me down against the couch, grasped my hips with his hand and pulled me closer to him. Another hand was firmly placed on the cushion next to me. I let out a soft chuckled and spoke up.
"No one is stopping you."
"I am."
Ashton rolled his eyes and let go of me. I sighed and looked over to see my father glaring at the two of us.
"You." He pointed to Ashton with a firm look on his face. "Out."
"I'm sorry Sir," he mumbled. Ashton looked at me and suddenly his mood changed. His eyes seemed to pierce through me like knifes. "This won't happen again." He snapped.
I felt my heart sting and my brain was slowly trying to figure what he meant. I watched as he walked out of the room and down the hall. He mumbled to himself loudly as I stared at him.
"Who the hell do you think you are interrupting my surgeons while they are trying to learn?" He yelled. "Give it up already, there is no way that women is getting her surgery!"
"Jennifer needs that surgery and you aren't doing anything to help her!" I felt my voice raise. "Those surgeons are willing to help a dying women and they aren't as cold hearted as you!"
"Don't talk to me like that! You're lucky I haven't banned you from seeing that family all together!" He continued to glare at me.
"You know? I was wondering why you were so attached to that case. Now I know why? That boy is using you Shannon. You may think he feels something for you or maybe you guys might end up together? But trust me, boys like him, don't fall for girls like you." He sighed.
"I have no idea what you're talking about?" I yelled.
"You're talented and smart, you shouldn't be wasting your time on him, as soon as Jenna gets her surgery, things will be back to normal."
"I don't feel that way about him Dad," I lied. Of coarse I had feelings for Ashton, but there was no way I was going to admit that to my father or Ashton himself.
"It doesn't matter Shannon, you should just quit while you're ahead." He mumbled. "You are not to set foot in this hospital until that women leaves."
"That isn't fair!" I yelled.
"You can't be here Shannon, you need to be out of this hospital, you spend almost every night here on a hopeless case!"
I finally gave up. I sighed and stepped out of the room while leaving my father far behind me.
I made my way to Jennifer's room where I saw Ashton sitting on the small cot in the corner of the room. Jenna was gone, probably off to her daily testing.
Ashton's head was in his hands like usual. When he heard me, he lifted his head and stood up.
"What happened?" He asked slowly. I grabbed my coat and started to walk out of the room. I turned around and stood in the doorway.
"I can't do this anymore," I mumbled.
"What do you mean?"
"I cant do this with you Ashton, do you even care about me or is this just some kind of manipulative game you're playing?" I sighed.
"What are you talking about?" he raised his voice as he spoke.
"My Dad wont let me see you anymore Ashton, because he thinks you're using me!" I yelled hysterically. I took a deep breath and spoke up once again. "Is he right?"
I watched as he looked down at the floor and avoided eye contact with me. I rolled my eyes and spoke up.
"Thats what I thought."
