eighteen

It had been about a week since Jenna found out about her tumor, it was now Saturday morning and both her and Ashton were excited that I was trying to find her a way to have the surgery. It was nice to the two of them were so happy.

I had convinced Ashton to take a walk with me considering the fact that he was only out of Jenna's room once these past two weeks, and that was to come to the conference room with me.

"Can I ask you for a favor?" He spoke up.

"Of coarse." I smiled.

"I want to see a surgery, you used to always talk about about them when we were working on that project together and I want to see one," He spoke up. I nodded my head. "I want to see what all the rave is about between you and Luke," he chuckled.

"Okay."

-

"So what is he doing now?"

"He's inserting the retractors Ashton," I chuckled.

"What about now," He mumbled as he watched carefully. I had snuck him into the observation room to watch one of Luke's Dad's tumor resections.

"He is putting gauze around the cut," I chuckled.

After a few hours of Ashton's constant questions. The two of us finally left.

"That was amazing," He mumbled. "He just saved that women's life."

"Yup."

"So you're going to do that one day?" I nodded my head.

"Maybe, not Cardio like Luke's Dad, but something like that," I said.

He continued to talk about the surgery until the two of us ended up on a bench outside of the hospital. The air was misty and the air was thick. I curled up into my jacket and leaned my head on Ashton's shoulder. The two of us were silent for a few minutes, we just sat there, looking out into the city.

"I think you and I should go grab something to eat tonight," He said confidently. I lifted my head off of his shoulder and gave him a confused look. "What?"

"You and I? Dinner?" I said with a questionable tone.

"Yes," He smirked. "I'll meet you out here, on this bench at five, and I'll take you to to the finest restaurant in town, the hospital cafeteria of coarse," he smiled.

"Wow, I didn't know Ashton Irwin took girls on dates?" I chuckled.

"I don't, It's not a date," He insisted. "Just two friends hanging out."

"Sure, whatever you say," I said. Ashton quickly checked his phone and stood up.

"See you later," he said quickly. I assumed he got a text from his Aunt, so he started to walk away.

"Can't wait until our date!" I called after him. I smiled when he turned around.

"It's not a date Shannon!"

-

For the next couple hours, I was just sitting in my father's office trying to figure out how I was going to get Jenna this surgery. I had run out of ideas, there was no way I could find enough money to afford it. I mean, it was 25,000 dollars. I was about ready to give up completely.

I snapped out of my thoughts when I looked at the time to see it was a quarter to five. I grabbed my coat off the chair, put it on, and left.

I walked outside to see Ashton smoking a cigarette next to the bench. I stood with my back against the wall of the hospital. I had my hands shoved deep into my pockets as I waited for him to finish.

He tossed the cigarette onto the ground and stepped on it when he saw me. He walked towards me, he smirked and rested his arm on my shoulder.

"I was almost afraid you wouldn't show," he said.

"I would never turn down a chance to go on a date with Ashton Irwin."

"It's not a date," he chuckled. I just shook my head and followed him inside. We walked down the hallway until we reached the elevator. "You know you don't have to help Jenna get this surgery," he said quietly as he pressed the button of the elevator.

"Yes I do," I mumbled. He gave me a confused glance. "I have to do it because you can't be left alone without her by your side, I don't know much about your parents, but I do know that they aren't really around right now and I can't just let Jenna leave you alone." He nodded his head. "I also don't need another seventeen year old boy running around my house," I joked. He just laughed.

"I'm an eighteen year old boy you know?" He corrected me with a smile.

-

"Favorite color?" He asked.

"Olive green." The two of us had been asking each other pointless questions for the last hour now and to be honest, I was finding it kind of fun.

"Favorite song?" I continued as I took another bite of my salad.

"Touch of Grey by the Grateful Dead," He said. I smiled knowing that we shared something in common, I loved the Grateful Dead.

"What's your full name?" He asked.

"Shannon Eleanor Montgomery," I chuckled. "I was named after a Beatles song."

"Eleanor Rigby?" He asked. I nodded my head. "I was right, you are the coolest person I know."

"So how do you like America?" He asked while he ate his chocolate pudding, which frankly, I found disgusting. I laughed and rolled my eyes.

"Well, I've been living here for almost five years, so I guess it's alright," I laughed.

"I can tell you're from France you know?" He said. "You still have an accent."

"I have an accent?" I questioned.

"Yeah, its adorable."

-

"Well, I'd say this date was successful," I teased. Once the two of us finished in the cafeteria, Ashton had walked me out to my car. It was drizzling out, something I had grown to love now that I live in Seattle.

"It wasn't a date, a date would have ended in a kiss," he said sternly. I wrapped my arms around his neck and watched him turn his head to the side which revealed his strong jawbone. He let out a chuckle and put his hands on my hips. He turned his head once again and looked at my lips. I slowly pulled him towards me and leaned in.

He pulled me in even closer as our lips moved together. I pulled away softly and felt the corners of my lips tug upward into a smile.

"Can I call it a date now?"
