Chapter 2
Greene family home ^
-
"My son and wife was in the car accident." The officer stated.
"How's your son?" I asked.
"He'll be okay. He has two broken ribs, and a few other things." He answered.
The elevator doors opened and I began to wheel myself out and felt my arms ache with pain from being sore.
"Do you need some help?" He asked.
"No, I got it." I replied.
"Why aren't you in your hospital room? You know they bring you food, right?" He inquired.
"I'm not getting food, I'm just roaming around." I stated.
"Oh." He replied.
I sighed and stopped turning the wheels on my wheel chair.
"I'm Rick." The officer stated before beginning to wheel me to the food.
I stayed quiet and felt an overwhelming amount of emotion flood me as my eyes landed on a little girl who looked to be the same age as Rachel.
"Danielle." I mumbled.
"I'm sorry about your loss. I heard about your sister." Rick stated.
"If you think I'm going to sue your ass, I'm not. You can stop trying to suck up and make sure I don't get millions from your damn insurance." I sassed as I began wheeling myself away from him.
I wheeled myself to the elevator and pressed the up button.
-
I knocked on the door of 312, and waited for someone to open the door.
"Oh, hi." The woman who hit my car replied.
"Hi." I replied.
"Can I help you?" She asked.
"I wanted to apologize." I replied.
"For what?" She inquired.
"Being bitter. I think you've learned your lesson, and I'm sure you'll never pick up your phone in the car ever again." I replied.
"You have nothing to apologize for, and I'll never touch my phone in the car again." She replied.
"I'll feel better if I apologize and forgive you." I stated.
"Thank you." She replied, her voice cracking.
"How's your son?" I asked.
"He's got a few broken ribs, a concussion, and they think a fractured collar bone." She answered.
"Damn." I mumbled.
"Hey, who's this?" Another police officer asked as he walked up.
"She was one of the people involved in the car accident." The woman answered.
"Oh. I'm sorry for your loss." He replied, taking off his ball cap.
I nodded and awkwardly looked to the floor.
"I'm Lori." The woman stated, sticking her hand out.
"I'm Danielle." I replied, forcing myself to shake her hand.
"Do you wanna come in? We're having pizza." Lori replied.
"No thanks. I should probably get back to my room." I stated.
"Do you need help?" She asked.
"No, I've got it." I replied.
I began wheeling myself back to my room before struggling to get the door open.
Suddenly someone pushed the door open from behind me, and I turned around to see Rick.
"Thanks." I mumbled.
"I hope I didn't offend you earlier." He stated.
"You didn't. It's just a hard time right now." I replied.
He nodded his head before closing the door and walking down the hall.
"He's a gentleman." Beth stated, sitting on my bed.
"Eh." I mumbled.
"He's way nicer than Blake." She muttered.
I opened my phone to find that I had zero texts from him, and it kinda made me sad that he didn't even care to check on me.
"You can do better than him." Beth stated as she put a hand on my shoulder.
-
I opened my eyes to find my father and Blake, my boyfriend, on either side of my bed.
"Hey, beautiful." Blake mumbled.
"Hi." I replied.
My father left the room and Blake leaned down and kissed my lips.
"Sorry I haven't got to come by. I've been working overtime at work." He replied.
"Blake, can you come here for a second?" Beth asked from the doorway.
After a few seconds, Blake's phone started ringing.
I reached over and grabbed his phone from the table to see that a Dustin was calling.
"Hello?" I asked after hitting the green button.
"Who's this?" A woman's voice asked.
"Danielle. Who's this?" I inquired.
"Miranda." She answered.
"Can I ask why you're calling?" I asked.
"Is Blake there? Are you his receptionist or something?" Miranda asked.
"He's not here right now." I answered.
"Can I leave a message?" She inquired.
"Sure." I replied.
"Okay, thanks! Tell him I said I changed our reservations for dinner, and I'll be a little late." She replied.
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and realized Blake was cheating on me. Why else would she be so mad that I answered with that?
Blake walked back into the room and I held up his phone.
"Who's Miranda? I'm already mad so don't lie to me." I snapped as I stood up from the hospital bed.
Blood rushed from his head and he grew pale.
"I've been seeing someone else." He replied.
I walked over to him and pushed him out into the hall.
I threw his iPhone to the floor and began kicking it around.
"I think it's time for you to leave." Shawn, my brother, told Blake.
I grabbed Blake's shirt collar and punched him as hard as I could.
"Woah." Beth mumbled.
Blake picked up his phone off of the ground and began running out of the hospital humiliated that a girl hit him.
I looked down the hall, watching as Rick pushed the other police officer against the wall.
"Stay away from my wife and son." Rick snapped.
"I guess you'd like to know that she's been cheating on you because you aren't there." The other one spat.
"Rick," Lori cried before Rick began storming down the hall.
The other police officer stepped toward Lori and she yelled for him to leave.
"What's going on? Please be quiet, we have patients trying to sleep." A nurse stated, walking down the hall.
-
"You're moving back in with us." Annette told me as she helped me get in the car.
I watched as a police cruiser pulled up and Rick got out of the car.
"I'm sorry to bother you, but I was wondering what time the funeral is. I would like to come pay my respects." He told Annette.
"Six o'clock this evening." Annette answered.
"Okay, thank you." He replied.
He nodded his head toward me and I nodded back before closing the car door.
"He's into you." Beth stated from beside me.
"No he isn't. He's married." I replied.
"So? He's in an unstable relationship." She replied.
"Beth!" Annette exclaimed as she got in the car.
-
"Blake dropped your things off earlier." My father told me as I walked inside my old home to see boxes of my things.
"I never want to see him again." I mumbled.
"I'm going to get dinner ready," Annette stated before walking into the kitchen.
"Dani, do you need help with your things?" Beth asked.
"Yeah, I guess so." I replied.
-
I bit down on my bottom lip and kept my eyes on the floor of the funeral home.
I couldn't be here. I couldn't stand to be here.
I stood up and walked out of the funeral home, ignoring the whispers as I did so.
I leaned against the porch railing outside and tried to calm my anxiety.
"Hey,"
I looked over to my right, finding Rick in his police uniform.
"Hi." I replied.
"I'm late, but I figured I should still come since Lori won't leave Carl in the hospital." He replied.
"You didn't have to come. You don't even know us." I stated.
"I feel like I should." He replied.
I looked to the truck that pulled into a parking spot, and I recognized it as Blake's.
I felt my stomach turn as he got out of the truck with another woman.
"Are you going back inside?" Rick asked.
"I can't. I don't want to." I answered.
Blake walked up onto the porch and looked over to me.
The woman stayed by the truck and I looked over to Blake.
"I don't want you in there. I don't want you here. None of us want you here." I stated.
"I'm paying my respects." He replied.
"No you aren't. You're doing this to make yourself feel like a good person. You never respected me or my family, and I sure as hell don't want you in there with my dead sister. I don't want you anywhere near my family ever again." I spat as I stepped forward.
"And you wonder why I left you the first time." He stated, and looked at me with the meanest look anyone could ever muster.
"Is that Miranda? Is that the girl you cheated on me with?" I asked.
Rick walked inside the funeral home and I was left with Blake.
"That's my fiancée." He answered.
"You have guts coming here." Shawn stated, walking out of the funeral home.
I grabbed Shawn's wrist before he attempted to hit Blake.
Blake walked back to his truck before leaving.
"I'm going to go see Maggie at the hospital." I told Shawn.
"Are you sure you're ready to drive?" Shawn asked.
"I'm fine." I replied.
"Actually, I'm heading to the hospital right now. You can ride with me, if you want." Rick stated, now standing beside Shawn.
"That's okay." I replied.
"Go with him." Shawn ordered.
