"We're here!" One of the people who brought us here shouted through the helicopter noise. "Where exactly are we?" I asked, my voice barely getting through. "You'll see." He answered shortly.
Somehow, I get this feeling that we aren't safe at all.
I felt a hand grasp mine, I looked up and realized it was Minho. He was looking out the window, his eyebrows furrowed. I squeezed his hand a little, making him face me.
I didn't say anything, I didn't know what to say. So I just gave him a small smile. His frown disappeared, the side of his lips raising a little. And even if it was barely a smile, it was enough for me.
The helicopter finally reached the ground, and the guy with us opened the door. There were a few armed men outside the helicopter, and although they were supposed to keep us safe, I didn't feel safe at all.
"Hurry up!" The guy shouted, pushing us out of the helicopter. "Thomas!" Minho shouted, waking him up. "Wake up we gotta go!" Minho shouted, making Thomas jump up from his position, quickly exiting the helicopter. We started to run through the open space, before I realized why they were making us run fast. There were people--no, creatures that were coming towards us.
Minho pulled my hand, making me remember we were still holding hands. I started to take in my surroundings, we were in a desert. The wind hitting my face just made it harder to run, but Minho who was pulling me forward stopped me from falling on my face. The armed men started to shoot off the ones chasing us, and once we reached the open door, they quickly closed it shut.
"What..were those?" Newt asked, his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. "Those are Cranks. That's what happens when you get the flare, kid." The guy from the helicopter answered.
The man guided us through the building, leaving us infront of a door. "Wait inside." He said, opening the door. Once we were all inside, he locked it tight.
I looked around, and there was food on the table. I sat down and started to eat, and so did the others. "You cook even better than this Frypan." Newt chuckled, lightening up the mood. "I kinda miss the Glade." I whispered. "Yeah." Winston smiled a little, playing with his food.
Under the table, Minho held my hand. We've been holding hands a lot lately, and I'm not even sure what we are. But that's not really important right now. Suddenly, Minho let go, bringing me back to reality.
"Nicole?" Thomas said, looking at me. Actually, everyone was looking at me with weird grins on their faces. "Huh?" I asked before eating a spoonful of food. "I said, you and Minho have been kinda sweet." Newt teased, making everyone laugh.
Meanwhile, Minho kept eating silently. "No! It's not like that." I denied. "We're not anything like that, I mean, in times like these you need support, right? That's what this is. Support." I said, not even realizing I was ranting. Minho scoffed beside me, violently stabbing the piece of meat with his fork and putting it into his mouth.
"Right, support. Whatever you say." Frypan sarcastically exclaimed. Suddenly, the door started to open.
We all stood up from the table as a guy in an all white suit emerged from the door. "You kids alright in here?" He asked with a grim smile on his face. He had gray hair, and a bothering mole on his cheek. His facial features reminded me of a rat.
"Who are you?" Thomas asked. "I'm the reason you're all still alive. And it's my intention to keep you that way. Now, come with me, let's get you kids squared away." He said before walking down the hall.
We followed him, of course.
"You can call me Mr Janson. I run this facility. For us, this is a sanctuary. A protection from the horrors of the outside world." He explained as we walked down the place. I blocked out most of what he was saying, and instead, I was still bothered by Minho's reaction earlier.
"We do have a place for you, a refuge of some sort." He said.
Was he disappointed? Did he think that we were more? Maybe I should've told everyone that we're not really nothing.
"Beyond this door is the start of your new lives." Mr Janson said, and this time I decided to listen. "But first, let's do something about that smell." Oh, thank God.
He lead the boys to a bathroom, before turning to me and Teresa. "We can't have you girls taking a bath with them, can we?" He joked before sending us to a different bathroom.
I stripped off my bloody clothes and entered one of the showers. I squirmed as the water rinsed me of everything. I can see it all on the ground; the blood, the dirt, everything we've been through.
"I hope everything gets better. This is so shucking tiring." I moaned as the warm water hit my skin. "Yeah, hopefully." Teresa said, her voice echoing.
Teresa and I haven't been very close, but I would love that.
I turned off the shower and started to dry myself, before wearing the clothes provided for us.
A woman was waiting for us outside, and without a word, she started walking. Teresa and I followed behind her. She stopped infront of a large door, opening it and letting us in.
Inside, another woman led us inside. She's much more friendlier, as she gave us a big smile.
I spotted Minho running the treadmill, and his eyes were already on me. My attention shifted to the woman taking my blood when she started to speak. "You're Nicole, right?" She asked. I nodded my head. "They need you to come with me after the tests." She said, smiling once again. I simply nodded once more.
"Are you done?" I asked when she pulled out the needle. "Yes, let's go." She said, rising up from her seat. I followed her, but turned around for the last time, searching for Minho.
Our eyes met once I was standing outside of the door, but the woman with me closed it shut.
Minho, I'll see you later.
