Honestly, I expected Grievers to kill us as soon as we stepped foot inside wherever the hole takes us too, but no.
A door with a sign that said 'exit' in bold, neon letters was what we were faced with. Nobody said a word as Thomas opened the door, leading everyone to a hallway. The walls, the floors, even the roof, were all white. There were a few pipes lining the sides of the roof, probably used for water or something.
"Where are we?" I asked, being the first one to speak since we got here. My hands were fidgeting so badly, I don't even know why I'm so scared. We're already safe now, I hope.
Minho, who was walking beside me, looked calm. He's probably scared too, but knowing him, he wouldn't like to show it.
We entered another door, and this time we were faced with computer screens and other high-tech gadgets. Some of them were broken, as if they were smashed.
I walked further inside, and I almost fainted when I saw a woman sprawled out infront of a computer. I quickly turned around, suddenly bumping into Minho. "Hey, what's-" He was about to ask, until he saw for himself. The others entered the room as well, and each had their own reaction.
Minho let me go and approached the computer, so we all did too. "Should red buttons be pressed?" He asked particularly no one. Thomas swooped in and pressed the button, as if he's so sure of what he just did.
A video started to play on the screen. It's a woman...a woman that seemed too familiar to me. "Hello. My name is Doctor Ava Paige. I'm Director Of Operations of the World Catastrophe Killzone Department. If you're watching this, that means you successfuly completed the Maze Trials. I wish I could be there in person to congratulate you, but certain circumstances have prevented that. I'm sure by now you must...." I stopped hearing what the lady was saying, and listened to my own thoughts.
Ava...Paige. I looked at the lady that was sprawled out infront of the computer, she's the one in the video.
"We called it The Flare. A deadly virus that attacks the brain. It is violent, unpredictable, uncurable. Or so we thought. In time, a new generation emerged that could survive the virus. Suddenly, there was a reason to hope for a cure." I heard what she was saying, but something just keeps pushing through my mind.
I know her...I know her!
I tapped Thomas on the arm. "Thomas, who is she?" I asked. "She's Dr. Paige. She runs this experiment." He explained briefly. "Thomas I remember her. But I can't...I can't remember who she was or... or what she did...I..." I ran out of words to say. I couldn't describe what I was feeling. "Nicole." Thomas whispered.
"Nicole." Minho said from behind me. "Are you okay?" He asked, worry laced in his voice.
People with guns started to flood in, smashing the equipment amd destroying everything. Dr Paige looked into the camera. "It may be too late for us, for me, but not for you. The outside world awaits." She pulled out a gun, raising it to her head. "Remember...wicked is good."
Bang.
I flinched as the video turned black.
"You..." I turned around so fast when I heard Gally's voice. "Gally, how did you-" I stopped talking when I spotted the gun in his hand. "Shut up!" He cried out, pointing the gun at me. Minho quickly stood infront of me, then Gally shifted his aim to Thomas.
"He's stung." Teresa said, throwing the hopes of talking him out of this out the window. "This is all your fault." Gally cried. "We could've stayed in the Glade!" His hand was shaking, he could fire at Thomas anytime.
Minho's hands adjusted on his wooden pole, so I backed away a little, knowing what he's gonna do. He flipped up the wooden pole, throwing it at Gally who dropped to the floor almost instantly.
"Chuck!" Thomas cried in vain. My eyes widened, and I quickly made my way towards Chuck. He got shot?! No. No. No.
I held his hand. "Chuck, hey buddy. It's okay. It's gonna be okay." I whispered as tears rolled down my cheeks. He pulled out something from his pocket, handing it to Thomas. "Give it to them...for me." Chuck said, barely able to speak anymore. "You're going to give this to them yourself. Chuck, no." Thomas cried as Chuck's eyes fluttered close.
I took a deep breath and let go of Chuck's hand. "Thomas..." I started. Before I could even say anything, a far door bursted open. Men in protective suits came running in. I quickly stood up and tried to run towards Minho, but someone has already caught me by the arm. "It's okay. We're getting you out of here." The man said.
We struggled for a bit before deciding to just follow them out, since it's pretty much the only choice we have. "We can't leave him here! Chuck! Chuck!" Thomas screamed as two men pulled him out. I closed my eyes, I don't want to see a friend suffer. If I could close my ears, I would have a long time ago.
They ushered us inside a helicopter, and once we were all inside, we flew off the ground. "You're safe now, don't worry." The man said, taking off his mask and smiling at us.
I looked down at the Maze, and I just felt so glad that we're out of there.
Finally, we're safe.
