Chapter 9
Tobias' POV
Right now I am going through the security cameras while Tris stays with Teigon. We both spent the night with him but agreed to take turns searching for whoever did this.
Bud doesn't fight me on the fact that I am not using the right account anymore since Im a leader and can't get in too much trouble from him.
I went back a while to the beginning of Tris' pregnancy and start searching. I stop when i see the two of us walking to the cafeteria, but it's not like any other day. There's someone lurking in the shadows, and although I can't see their face, only their piercings, I know they're watching Tris.
I fast-forward more and more until I see Tris walking again, but she stops and looks in the shadows. I can't see their face and from the looks of it neither, can Tris.
"Four?" I hear bud say so I look at him.
"Yes."
"You're a good man, you know that?" I nod a little and smile. It's nice to hear that.
"I can tell you really love your wife and kid. I'm sorry...about what happened to him." I frown a little at the end of what he's saying. It's pity. I hate pity.
"Well if you want to help, you can keep an eye on Tris, she's in the hospital. You can log in on a different computer so you can still watch your cycle. I'm going to find out who did this." I say and he nods and does what i said while I look back at my computer.
I go to the amity cameras and find the one in the meeting room, but it's all black, as if someone spray-painted it. They aren't dumb, that means I can cross Peter off the list. He may have changed, but I was still suspicious.
There's not very many people I can think of who would do this. Eric, Max, Jeanine, and Marcus are all dead, candor told us they were executed on site. Although there was no dauntless that witnessed. I should probably check that.
I type in a few things and the screen pops up to candor doing their interrogations. Jeanine goes first. They inject her and sit her down on the stool, where she looks exhausted.
"Jeanine, I will first be asking you simple questions to make sure the serum is working," Jack Kang says through my headphones.
"What is your full name?"
"Jeanine Matthews." she says immediately.
"What was your former faction?"
"Erudite."
"What faction are you in now?"
"Erudite." she sounds irritated but never misses a beat when answering.
"Is it true that you were the lead person in the plan to attack abnegation?"
"Yes,"
"Who were you working with?"
"The dauntless leaders."
"What were their names?" Jack says calmly but you can see the annoyance on his face.
"Eric and Max. Max was more in it then Eric though."
'Why were you trying to overthrow abnegation?'
"They don't deserve to be the governing faction, Erudite does."
"And how were you going to accomplish that?"
"I made a serum that controls your body and mind. I was going to have Max and Eric have everyone in dauntless get injected so I would be able to control them from Erudite, making them kill abnegation."
"Do you have any other information that you haven't told us that we will need to know about this case?"
"No."
"Case dismissed, thank you for your honesty."
Everyone else repeats 'thank you for your honesty' and they drag Jeanine to the side, putting Max up next.
"Max, we will be asking you a series of questions that you will be answering honestly with our serum."
They inject him and his posture goes slack.
"What is your full name?"
"Maxwell Jones." he answers immediately.
"What was your former faction?"
"Dauntless."
"What is your current faction?"
"Dauntless."
"Did you help Jeanine attempt the attack on abnegation?"
"Yes."
"Why?" Jack says and I immediately start paying more attention then before.
"I also believe Erudite should be the governing faction, but the stiffs are too stubborn to just give up their leadership." he smirks a little but it doesn't stay for long.
"Is there anything else we may need to know about this case that you haven't told us?" jack asks and Max shakes his head.
"Thank you for your honesty."
Everyone else repeats it and they drag Max to the side. So far no one has been executed yet but they may be doing that in the end.
They take Eric up and I straighten up, listening carefully as I watch them inject him and ask him about his name and crap. Finally they start asking about his part in all of this.
"Eric, is it true that you were helping Jeanine and Max attempt the attack on abnegation?"
"Yes and no."
"What do you mean when you say this?"
"I mean, I agreed to help, but was pressured into it by Max. If it were my choice, I couldn't care less about abnegation or erudite being governing faction."
"Is there anything else we may need to know about this case?"
"No."
"That concludes this case, thank you for your honesty."
Everyone repeats it and I'm sitting her dumbfounded. I'm not sure what to think of this.
"We will now move on to Marcus Eaton and save any executions for the end."
They inject him and ask him the first few questions that make sure he's not lying.
"Is it true that you beat your son, Tobias Eaton, while he was in abnegation."
"No, I was a great father to him. What erudite said were all rumors." What the hell?! I am living proof that he beat me. He may be Divergent, but they will get him for any type of proof.
"Then can you explain what this image is?" Jack says and shows Marcus a printed picture of me in dauntless, showing Tris my back with my face to the side, so people can see it's my face. Great.
"That is not my son." he is a great liar so I am not sure if candor will believe him or not.
"We did an identity check with erudite's technology and it says that this is indeed your son Tobias. We will not need to hear anything else so case is concluded. Thank you for you honesty." jack says and everyone repeats it.
"We will now be executing Max, Jeanine, and Marcus. Eric will be held prisoner for a year and then be under high supervision. His leadership will also be taken away from him." So candor lied to us. Candor.
They told us that Eric was executed on site.
I hear some gunshots and look back at the screen to see Jeanine, Marcus, and Max on the ground with bullet-holes in their skulls.
That means Eric could be a suspect. He was the person in the shadows. His piercings. How could I be so stupid? I need to find a different camera in Amity to see if it was him.
I type a few things and a different camera in the meeting room that is hidden pops up. I see a man walk in in all black with the hood of his jacket over his head and a knife in hand. He stabs Teigon in the shin and Tris and I immediately run to Teigon as the man is running away. I rewind a little and pause when the man turns around. I can't believe it. I finally found out who did this to my baby.
It was Eric all along.
The man in the shadows.
