Chapter Twenty-Seven!
"It's time," I say to Tris, and Will. I walk with them, I walk silently next to Will who's arm is wrapped around me, I lean on his shoulder, and just think.I was waiting for my name to be called so I can get up, and walk to the final test where the Daunless leaders, are monitoring, and watching your every move, and a big Dauntless crowd watching us on a screen.
I must be shaking, because Will takes my hand, and lifts it to his lips,he kisses it gently then rubs the spot, with his free hand. My one fear is that one of us will make it, and the other won't. I can't even picture a life without him, I only see the years to come!
"You okay?" Asks Will, with concern.
"Yeah I'm good, but I could be better, how about you?"
"I'm going to be very Candor about it, I'm so nervous." He says, he always finds a way to make me feel better.
"So am I, I'm shaking like a chewawa!"
"Logically speaking the term shaking like a chewawa is really illogical, us humams can not know the bio-" He stopped himself, but it didn't really matter I wasn't listening anyways. "I sound like an Erudite, don't I?"
"A cute Erudite." I say, then peck his cheek with my lips. I'm so glad that we are now a thing, I know that I should also worry, about him making the cut, and not me, but I can't help at smile at the fact, that now people know that we're a couple.
"Christina, I love you." He says, and my eyes pop wide. That was the most unexpected think that, he could have said. I considered this. "I know that, it's a bit early to say this, but It's true, I've always felt this way about you, and these pasr few days it has gotten stronger-"
"I love you, too." I say cutting him off, that's all I had to hear from him. He lifted my chin with his hand, and kissed me one soft kiss. I sighed at the taste of him. Then sadly I was brought back into the reality of bieng in the room with all the nervous initiates.
"Do you have your plan from last night?" Will asks, last night we stayed up to make a plan how we're going to pass our fears today. I knew already what was going to be in my landscape, so forming a plan wasn't that difficult, it's how I use the plan that matters!
"Yeah, you?" I ask, he reaches for the back of his pants.
"Yup, don't worry you're going to be great!" He says, I hope that he's right, I focus my eyes on the screens. The Dauntless-born initiates go first, and then the tranfers second.
The screen on the left shows a blackclothed girl in the fear landscape room-Marlene. I watch her move, her eyes wide, but I can't tell what obstacle she's facing. Thank God no one out here will see my fears either-just my reactions to them. The middle screen shows her heart rate. It picks up for a second and then decreases. When it reaches a normal rate, the screen flashes green and the Dauntless cheer.
The screen on the right shows her time. The room is large and contains another screen, similar to the one outside. A line of people sit in chairs in front of it. Eric is one of them, and so is Max. The others are also older. Judging by the wires connected to their heads, and their blank eyes, they are observing the simulation.
The thought that I'm going to have them know what's in my simulation, and observe it so closely freaks me out. They're probably going to kick me out when they see that I'm afraid of moths! I think. I train my eyes back to the line of judges.
Behind them is another line of chairs, Will, and I get the last two seats, right next to Uriah, and a few other Dauntless-born initiates, there are only four left, the rest have already went through their fear landscapes. It's not until Tris walks in, I realize that I've totally forgoten about her, she's the last person to enter, I'm about to call her over, when I realize that Will, and I have taken the last two seats.
"Hey, Tris!" Uriah calls out, he pats his leg. "You can sit on my lap, if you want."
"Tempting,"Tris call back, from across the room, she's so far away that I barley see her grinning. "It's fine. I like to stand."
The lights lift in the fear landscape room, revealing Marlene in a crouch, her face streaked with tears. Max, Eric, and a few other s shake off the simulation daze and walk out. A few seconds later I see them on the screen, congratulating her for finishing.
"Transfers, the order in which you go through the final test was taken from your rankings as they now stand," Four says. "So Drew will go first, and Tris will go last." That means three people will go before I do. Eric sticks Drew with the needle and sends him into the fear landscape room. By the time it's my turn, I will know how well some of the others did, and how well I will have to do to beat them.
The fear landscapes are not interesting to watch from the outside. I can see that Drew is moving, but I don't know what he is reacting to. After a few minutes, I close my eyes instead of watching and try to think of nothing. Speculating about which fears I will have to face, and how many there will be, is useless at this point.
Molly goes next. It takes her half as long as it takes Drew, but even Molly has trouble. She spends too much time breathing heavily, trying to control her panic. At one point she even screams at the top of her lungs. It amazes me how easy it is to tune out everything else. All I can do now is get past this obstacle. Then it's my turn,
"Christina," Eric calls out, I walk into the room, and Eric insirts an orange syringe needle into my skin, then I fade away into my fearlandscape!
