Soulful Eyes

(Requested by: @-lilmunchkin )

"It's quick. Grab the target, and get him back to the Compound for questioning. We are operating in large public masses, so stealth is a must." Natasha recited off of the report.

She began to give each of us our sections. You high-fived Bucky when you got placed together.

Soon, the quinjet touched down in a field outside the main metropolis and we each got out in our groups. You and Bucky had the roof since both of you were the best snipers.

It was going well enough. The rest of the team made it through the masses with little trouble while you and Bucky incapacitated the uncovered threats.

The target was a high-end businessman with ties to HYDRA and several other illegal and heinous organizations. He had several scattered body guards and even more agents watching him closely.

Nat snuck in front of him and distracted him while Steve dealt with a few of his body guards and Wanda was trying to thin the crowds to avoid any civilian casualties. Clint was on an opposite roof simply calling anything he saw.

"(Y/L/N), Barnes, there's a surge of reinforcements coming from behind the west building. I've got a group on my side coming from the north east."

"Got it. I'll get an angle on your side."
You turned to Bucky. "You have the west group?"
He nodded silently and you both took your positions.

"(Y/N), more agents on your side. I've got my group."

"Bucky's got it. Right, Bucky?"

Bucky nodded grimly.
What you didn't see was the stray agent that made his way towards your building, creeping up the inner stairwell.

You heard a faint banging from the latch to the roof, but you didn't turn in time.

Bucky dove over you and two shots rang out. You leaned and shot the agent in the neck.

You quickly turned to see Bucky clutching his chest.

"Bucky's been shot. Do you have the target?" You were panting, fear flooding your system.

"Yes, get back to the quinjet. We need to leave before more reinforcements come. Put pressure on the wound," Steve answered over the comms.

When you got back, Bucky was immediately taken to the infirmary.

You sat on the couch alone for a bit, your head in your hands. Not before long, tears were welling in your eyes.

Steve sat down next to you, a gentle hand rubbing across your shoulder blades.

"You're fine, Doll. You're okay. He's tough, he'll be okay."

You took a labored breath.
"I know. It's just, I never seem to do anything right. Especially recently. I've been letting everyone down. Even you."

You stood up and briskly walked to your room.

Steve tried to follow you, but you shut the door on him.

He loved you a lot, but he knew that sometimes your inner demons took over and sometimes he wasn't enough to help.

He needed a way to cheer you up, even when he wasn't there to do it.

He sighed as he went back to check on Bucky. They had taken out the bullets and stitched both wounds up. Luckily, they weren't very deep and hadn't hit anything important.

Bucky smiled at Steve. "Tell (Y/N) I'm fine. It wasn't her fault. I know how she gets on missions like that."

"I already did, but she just took it really hard."

"Don't worry, Stevie. You'll figure something out."

At that point, Steve was pushed out by Dr. Cho.

Steve still didn't know how to cheer you up. You had been in your room for hours.

He begrudgingly went the living room and turned on the tv. A commercial came on and Steve immediately had an idea.

("In the arms of the angels...")

•••••
The next morning, you woke up to a musty smell. When you opened your eyes, you were looking into two brown, deep orbs.

You let out a scream.

Steve immediately smiled as he raced to your room.

"What's the matter, Doll?"

You had an exasperated smile on your face.

"I-I can't believe you!" You let out a small laugh.

In your arms was a Golden Retriever puppy, nuzzling it's nose into your arm.

Steve grinned even wider at your apparent happiness.

"What do you think?" He asked, unable to stop smiling.

"What do I think? I think he's adorable! Can I keep him?" You brought his face up to yours and did your best puppy eyes and pouty face. (Pun intended)

Steve nodded.

"He's been approved and everything."

"It's a he?" You raised him and checked before putting him back into a comfortable position.

"I'll name him Mr. Truffles."

Steve laughed before he went to take the puppy. You hesitated before you gave him up.

"Wait," you paused. "We don't have a collar or dog food or chew toys-"

Steve fished a PetSmart gift card out of his back pocket (with difficulty) and handed it to you.

"Oh my- you didn't. Thank you, Stevie."

You smiled and hugged Steve before going in for a kiss. Mr. Truffles gave a little bark between the two of you. You both broke away, laughing.

"Well, it's settled. He's officially a stinker." You giggled as you petted behind his ear.

"Oh, I didn't know whether to mention it or not, but he's kind of a service dog. For anxiety and, uh, PTSD."

You looked up to Steve.
"Really?"
"Y-yeah."

You looked back at Mr. Truffles.

"That makes him even better."

Mr. Truffles yelped and started wrestling around in Steve's arms.

"We need to get him a collar and leash for walks and stuff. He's pretty restless as it is," you reasoned.

Steve kissed your cheek.
"Okay, Doll. Okay."

•••••
Mr. Truffles quickly became a favorite around the Compound. Sometimes other members would ask to spend the day or night with him, for a small puppy/therapy session.

Steve knew he couldn't always help you with your darker sides, but that didn't mean he didn't love you or wouldn't be there for you.

As the others liked to say, he just had a small version of him to help where he couldn't.
