Scene: You work for Hydra.

•••••
Your P.O.V.
•••••
Three years. In the most basic form of torture I know- HYDRA.

It was terrible. I get taken out of the facility, given my mission, I complete my mission, they don't blow my brains out, and then I'm locked back up.

They do nothing but give me food and water, have five hundred guards take me to weapons and defense training, and let me exercise.

They don't help with the nightmares. I scream with the woman I killed last week. I writhe with the man I stabbed a month ago. I cry with their orphaned children. The visions and hallucinations haunt me. I see their blood flood my cell floor. I hear the snaps of their bones, over and over. The skull of a little girl begs for mercy. It's terrible. It's morbid. It's- my life.

I was told I've been working for HYDRA for three years, except I don't really remember anything before that. They told me that I was practically homeless, and that they "kept me from starving to death in a dumpster and saved me".

Well, as I was pondering this, they opened my cell door. "Agent (Y/F/N), we have a new operation for you." The man in charge, I call him Bob, handed me a file. The file had a picture of a scraggly man with brilliant blue eyes and a frown. "The Winter Soldier has gone MIA from his mission, and we believe he has gone AWOL and formed an alliance with the Avengers."

"Who are-" "Here are their files. Your mission entitles you to go undercover to infiltrate their base and take out the Winter Soldier. Their may be other casualties, but he and Captain America are your two main targets. You have three months. The Winter Soldier is believed to have PTSD, so he will be doubtful, tense, guarded, and in all very hard to assassinate quickly. That, and, you need to get as much information from their base as possible. You have to-"

"Gain their trust and then betray them," I finished solemnly, fiddling with a bracelet I had made from twine. Bob smiled maliciously. "Right." I thought of how many operations I had done like this. I thought of how many lives I've ended, how many innocent people I've killed. I thought about how I wanted it all to end.

"When do I begin?"

"Team, we are having a meeting. Meet in the designated room immediately." This played in the speakers all over the Avengers facility.

"What was that about?" Steve asked Bruce as they began walking towards the meeting room. "Don't know. It ought to be important," Bruce replied.

As they all sat down, Director Coulson entered, along with a woman. "Team, I would like to introduce to you the newest member of our team, (Y/F/N)."

The whole team turned to look at her. She stood tall, which was impressive under their skeptical stares. "What's she got?" Sam asked bluntly, really meaning, "How is she valuable to us?"

"(Y/N) is not only a trained assassin," (Nat scoffed at that.) "But she is also extra sensory and an expert sniper." (Clint snickered.)

Coulson eyed the two of them. "This is her file." He placed the folder on the the table. "Please," he snarled. "Make sure to welcome her to the team." And with that, he gave her a gentle squeeze on the shoulder and left.

Everyone eyed her like hawks. She still stood her ground, while absent-mindedly playing with her bracelet. The only one who didn't was Bucky. He was busy looking at her file. "So, you used to work for HYDRA?" Everyone's glares increased.

She shrugged. "They employed me for a bit. I took out threats. Not much else." Bucky set down the papers and gazed at her a bit. But his gaze was soft. "It musta' been terrible."

A crack formed in her. Her tough facade had been dented. "Um, yeah. They would- uh, they tortured me. I-if I didn't complete my mission."

Everybody's glares dropped. "I'm sorry," Bucky offered. (Y/N) shrugged again, barely smiling. "It's fine. It's-" She faltered. "It's over."

(Y/N) typically tried to avoid The Winter Soldier, but she couldn't completely alienate him. She didn't like to get too close to targets. It made the job harder. She would be nice to him when she had to be engaged. He was the one really connecting with her.
He always stuck up for her and offered comfort after a mission gone wrong.

She presumed it was only because they both had been hurt by HYDRA, but that was only the beginning. She didn't see the way he looked at her when she wasn't looking. She didn't know he admired her concentrated look when they practiced hand-to-hand combat. She didn't think he adored how awkward she was on rides in the quinjet. She only saw his hard demeanor.

But, little by little, she was falling for him too. They were like broken glass shards, falling together to form a beautiful sculpture.

•••••

This was it. Her three months were almost up, and she had gained their trust. They had found a HYDRA base, (thanks to a tip off from a little birdie) and were now trying to infiltrate it. HYDRA agents had caught them, and they were under heavy fire. The team was split up: Cap was on the third floor with Falcon, Nat and Clint were on an alternate roof trying to come in for backup, Hulk was taking down outside soldiers with Iron Man, and Thor and Vision were trying to attack agents on the first floor. (Y/N) and the Winter Soldier had been backed onto the roof. The Winter Soldier was taking out agents one after another; (Y/N) didn't have to take a single shot.

"We've got the fighting under control on the third floor." Cap grunted over the communication line. "We have defeated the soldiers on the bottom floor." Thor added. "The soldiers outside have retreated to the opposite building," Tony sighed. "Nat, Clint, have you got it covered?" There was a loud gunshot and a grunt.

"Yeah, we're good." Clint groaned in exhaustion. Everyone released a sigh of relief. "Bucky? (Y/N)? What's your situation?" Cap asked. Little did the team know, they had both discarded their ear pieces, and she had a gun aimed at Bucky's temple.

It had happened so suddenly. He had taken out the last soldier, and she was conflicted. Should she destroy all of the trust and friendship she had gained in that little time? Should she go back to killing? Or, could she die knowing she did the right thing? Should she die at the hands of her "savior" of an employer because she showed weakness, because she showed compassion?

But, her tortured instincts took over and she ran to shove her gun to his temple, full of bullets thanks to his protection.

"(Y/N)? What are you doing?"

Her hand was beginning to shake. "Hail HYDRA," she whispered, her voice shaking as well. Bucky sighed. "(Y/N), you don't want to do this. Please. I know what they do. They brainwash you; they torture you. They use your sweat and blood, only to shed others'.

"Please, (Y/N). We can protect you. I will protect you. I will personally make sure that they can never hurt you again. I will give you back the life you deserve. You never have to answer to them again." He took a deep breath, his eyes holding back pain and tears.

"Please, (Y/N). You just have to put the gun down." She took what felt like an eternity to finally lower her gun. A nervous laugh erupted from her lips. "I never want to work for them again. I never want to kill for them again. I'm done with HYDRA."

She dropped the gun and Bucky turned to embrace her. He laughed as well. "I'm sorry, Bucky. I'm sorry to everybody. I'm so-" She was cut off as a jolt shocked through her and a gunshot rang out.

She crumpled to the floor. Bucky turned to see a HYDRA agent that he had attacked, still alive, pointing a gun at him. Bucky shot him twice between the brows before he turned back to (Y/N).

He dropped to his knees. "No, no, no. C'mon, you're okay. C'mon, (Y/N). You are gonna survive this. I know you can. I'm gonna carry you outta here, and I'm gonna ask you out like I should've a long time ago."

You raised a weak hand up and cupped his cheek. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry-" Bucky shushed you.
"It's okay. It's all okay. I'll stay- I'll stay with you-"
"Bucky, go, the team needs you. I'll be okay. I'll stay here and give 'em your love. I'll make sure they know how much they've cost us. I'll make them pay."

A rain of bullets came down on the two of you, and Bucky was forced to run from your bleeding body. He never forgave himself as he left the facility in the quinjet, watching your body fade into the distance.

•••••
He didn't rest. He didn't eat. He vowed vengeance. He was going to take up your promise on HYDRA. He was going to show how much they cost him: his world. So, he was going to tear apart theirs. He was going to make them pay.

(He died a year later from a bullet wound, attempting to take down his forty-fifth HYDRA base. In his uniform pocket, they found an old photograph of himself and his troop during the war, and a mysterious twine bracelet. The source of the latter was unknown.)
