The first chord of trust

After classes, the weather outside was clear, and on this occasion, Kai decided to take a walk to his favorite park. After gathering his things, he headed for the school exit, but suddenly Phoebe blocked his path.
“Where are you going? You still have a rehearsal,” she said, standing in front of him and blocking his way to the exit.
“Phibs, can you at least leave me alone today?” He pushed her out of the way and ran to the school gates.
“Idiot,” she muttered to herself.
The guy went to the park and, sitting by his favorite apple tree at the end of the park, put on his headphones and played the first song from the recommendations as background music. Taking out a notebook and a pen, he leaned against the tree trunk and closed his eyes for a second, imagining the moments that could be happening in his song. A picture appeared before his eyes: it’s raining outside, everything is foggy, and then a person who is dear to the character appears; Kai became completely absorbed in the music. He sat with his legs drawn up and leaning on them, staring blankly at the lines in his notebook, mentally going over the chords. The sound of the wind in the apple tree’s crown merged in his mind with the melody that was about to sound...
Something touched Kai’s shoulder, pulling him out of his reverie; he instinctively jumped aside, breathing heavily, and raised his eyes. Avdeev was standing in front of him, surprised no less than he was.
“Hi, what are you doing here?” Mark cautiously sat down next to him to give Kai time to calm down.
“I want to ask you the same question.”
“Well, it’s just that this is my favorite place, and in my free time, Leo and I come here to relax.”
“Who’s Leo?” Kai tensed up at the mention of some guy, but Mark looked away and gazed into the distance.
“He’s my close friend; until today, he was the only one... So, what are you doing here?”
“This is also my favorite place; I come here when I want to be alone and write new lyrics for a song.”
“Why aren’t you carrying a guitar? Isn’t it better to come up with lyrics for a song while simultaneously strumming chords?”
“Well… When I go out with a guitar, I come here. And if I don’t have any inspiration or it’s raining, the guitar becomes an unnecessary burden, so I come up with the words here and then play them at home.”
“Mmm, and the younger ones don’t bother you at home?”
“What?” I don’t have any brothers or sisters; I live alone with my mom.” Kai pulled one leg up to his chest and stretched the other out.
“Does your mom work from home?” If so, then so do I.
“No… she works at a hospital and almost never spends the night at home.”
Mark tilted his head to the side and looked at Kai. “Then why are you sitting here if you’re almost always alone at home?”
“I don’t know, it’s more comfortable here, and inspiration comes faster.”
“Oh, I get it.” He lowered his gaze to the guy’s notebook and noticed an earbud in his ear. “So, how’s your inspiration?”
“Not very good, I have almost no ideas.”
“What are you listening to?” If you want, I can recommend a few songs to you — maybe they’ll inspire you. Kai took out one earbud and handed it to Mark. “Okay, tell me the title.” “Let me do it myself — it’s a Russian song.” Kai handed him the phone, and Mark started typing the title “You’re Not Mine — Sveta” and played the song. After handing the phone back, he asked Kai for a notebook. “Can I take a look at what we’ve got?” He took the notebook and started reading lines from various songs. Meanwhile, Kai was enjoying the song, even though he didn’t understand a single word.
“Hey, what’s this song about?”
“Well, basically… about a girl who’s upset because she broke up with her boyfriend.”
“Why did you play this particular song?”
Mark turned to Kai. “This is my mom’s and my favorite song; it reminds us of home.”
“Of Russia?”
Mark nodded silently and shifted his gaze to the notebook. “More like how great it was to live there before all this hustle and bustle.”
“Strange connection,” Kai thought, but he didn’t dwell on it and continued listening to the music.
- What else do you like to listen to?
- Different things, mostly about the past, m‑m‑m, forget it.
He waved his hand and closed his eyes, lifting his head and enjoying the nature. Kai broke him out of his reverie by nudging him in the shoulder.
“Mark, it’s getting dark, I think it’s time for us to leave.”
“Huh?” And yes, of course,” Mark gathered his things, getting up from the ground; he extended his hand to the guy, helping him rise.
“So, see you tomorrow?”" Kai looked into Avdeev’s eyes, studying his gaze, which was both ordinary and yet captivating. “See you tomorrow,” Mark waved goodbye as he headed toward home. Kai also headed home; he thought this day had been the best of the entire school year.
