Damn meeting
On October 1st, strangely enough, September flew by unnoticed, and Kai was very glad about it. He was sitting in the penultimate lesson and pondering new lines for his song. He was already imagining how quickly he would get home, and then he would go to the park in another neighborhood, where, in his favorite spot under the apple tree, he would come up with beautiful words and ideas. Mrs. Barrett interrupted his thoughts.
-Kai Stone, will you come back to us?
“Mrs. Barrett…” Kai thought, snapping out of his fantasies. He was in chemistry class and hated the subject—not only because it was boring, but also because of the old corgi.
-Mr. Stone, I’m waiting for your answer!
The class buzzed, and the teacher focused on the students. And then, luckily, the bell rang, and the boy ran out of the classroom faster than anyone else. He hoped that the last lesson would be physical education, and there wouldn’t be anything interesting there. On the way, he met some guys who seemed not very friendly to Kai.
-Oh, Stone, we’ve been waiting for you.- said one of the guys, who was dressed in an expensive suit.
-Me? Sorry, but I’m in a hurry…-He tried to leave as quickly as possible, but they dragged him into an empty classroom. Inside, it was dark; all the desks were in one corner, and some of them were broken or decorated. There were no windows, and the only sign that this place wasn’t abandoned was a dim light bulb.
-Now you’ll have to back up your words.- one of the guys said, moving closer.
-What? Not as brave as you were during the performance?
-What performance? You can calmly explain…
- He didn’t have time to finish before he was hit in the nose, which left Kai stunned; crimson blood with a metallic taste flowed across the young man’s lips.
-What’s there to explain to someone who can’t even politely refuse a girl?
Kai closed his eyes, preparing for the blow. Suddenly, someone entered the office.
-This is my chance.- Kai slipped past them while their attention was fully focused on the brown‑eyed guy.
-How did I remember his eyes?-Kai thought as he approached his house, but he decided not to dwell on it. He looked out the bus window at his neighborhood, lost in thoughts about how the main character in his song had fallen in love… “FALLEN IN LOVE?!” Kai froze at the thought. How had it even come to his mind? “Maybe he was just watching those Turkish TV series with his mom, or maybe…”
The guy almost missed his stop, and when the doors were almost closing, he jumped out onto the street, breathing heavily, and ran home. He was scrolling through Instagram, looking for ideas, and suddenly came across the channel of the school basketball team. He stopped on that video and noticed a familiar guy — the same one who had been in the empty classroom. Kai stopped at the pedestrian crossing, looking at that guy, and suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car and jumped to the side. The car drove past him by a millimeter, and Kai, terrified, ran home to change clothes. After going into the bathroom, he adjusted his light brown hair, which was a bit longer than usual and had become disheveled because of all the commotion.
