Part One: The Encounter
The city never truly slept. Even past midnight, neon lights flickered in puddles, shadows stretched across the narrow alleys, and the low hum of life lingered like an unspoken secret. Detective Lee Felix had grown used to the rhythm of it-the restless pulse of a city too tangled in its own sins to rest.
Tonight, though, felt different.
Felix tightened his grip around the cold metal of his flashlight, the beam cutting through the mist that curled along the edges of the deserted street. He moved with practiced caution, every sense sharp, alert. The reports had been clear: the infamous contract killer, Hwang Hyunjin, was somewhere nearby. Too close for comfort.
For weeks, Felix had been chasing shadows, following bloodstained trails that always seemed to vanish right before his eyes. Each time he thought he was close, Hyunjin slipped away like smoke through his fingers. A ghost. A phantom. But not tonight.
Tonight, Felix felt it in his bones. He was close-closer than ever.
The informant's tip had led him here, to an abandoned warehouse at the edge of the city. Rain tapped against the metal roof, a steady, hollow rhythm. His footsteps were silent against the damp floor as he crossed the threshold.
His heart drummed in his chest, matching the beat of the rain.
He scanned the room, sweeping the flashlight across broken crates and rusted equipment. His other hand hovered near his holster, every muscle tense beneath his coat. There was no sign of life. Not yet.
"Come on," Felix murmured under his breath. "Where are you?"
A flicker of movement to his left.
He spun, weapon raised-but it was only a scrap of tarp fluttering in the breeze. He exhaled a slow, shaky breath, steadying himself. Hyunjin was playing with him. He could feel it.
He's here. I know he is.
Felix stepped deeper into the shadows, aware of the way they seemed to swallow him whole. For a moment, he thought he heard footsteps behind him, soft and deliberate. He turned sharply, but again, saw nothing. Just the echo of his own paranoia.
But then-
A presence.
So close he could feel the warmth of breath against the nape of his neck.
Felix's blood ran cold as realization struck. Before he could react, a hand darted from the darkness, quick as lightning, and snatched the flashlight from his grip. The beam tumbled to the floor, spinning wildly until it settled, casting an eerie glow that illuminated the silhouette behind him.
Hwang Hyunjin.
Tall, lean, and exuding a quiet, lethal confidence, Hyunjin stepped into the faint circle of light. His dark eyes glinted with something that wasn't quite amusement, but not quite malice either. His lips curled into a slow, deliberate smirk.
"Looking for me, detective?"
Felix's breath caught in his throat. His mind screamed for him to draw his weapon, to do something-anything-but he was frozen, caught between fear and something far more dangerous: fascination.
"You've been getting closer," Hyunjin continued, his voice smooth and calm, as though they were old acquaintances meeting by chance. "I almost thought you'd catch me this time."
Felix forced himself to move, to take a step back and draw his gun. He aimed it squarely at Hyunjin's chest, but the killer didn't flinch. If anything, his smirk deepened.
"Don't," Felix warned, though his voice betrayed the tremor he couldn't suppress. "Don't come any closer."
Hyunjin tilted his head, studying him with a kind of quiet curiosity. "If I wanted to kill you," he said softly, "you'd already be dead."
The words hung between them, heavy with truth.
Felix swallowed hard, sweat beading at his temple despite the chill in the air. He should arrest him. He should call for backup. But he hesitated, and in that hesitation, Hyunjin took another step forward.
"I've seen the way you chase me," Hyunjin murmured, his gaze never leaving Felix's. "It's almost flattering."
"You think this is a game?" Felix snapped, his grip tightening on the gun.
Hyunjin's smile faded, replaced by something more serious. "No," he replied. "Not a game. But it is a dance."
Before Felix could respond, Hyunjin moved-swift, fluid, like water. In an instant, he was close enough that Felix could see the fine scar tracing Hyunjin's jaw, the slight quickening of his pulse beneath the skin. Their eyes locked, and for a fleeting moment, Felix saw something unexpected in the killer's gaze.
Loneliness.
It startled him, cracked the armor of his resolve. Why would a man like Hyunjin, a ghost among killers, look so human?
"You don't have to do this," Felix said, quieter now. He hated how the words escaped him, as though they came from someplace deeper than duty. "Turn yourself in."
Hyunjin's eyes softened, just for a second. "And miss the chance to keep seeing you?"
Felix's breath hitched.
The absurdity of it all made his heart race in ways it shouldn't. Here he was, a detective, sworn to uphold the law, standing face-to-face with a killer-and yet, some part of him didn't want to pull the trigger.
Some part of him wanted to understand.
Hyunjin must have seen the conflict written across Felix's face because his expression shifted to something almost gentle. He reached out slowly, deliberately, as if offering a fragile truce, and with two fingers, he pressed the barrel of the gun down, away from his chest.
Felix didn't stop him.
"Why?" Felix asked, his voice rough with confusion. "Why not run?"
Hyunjin's answer came in a whisper, close enough that Felix could feel the warmth of his breath.
"Maybe I'm tired of running."
For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. The warehouse seemed to hold its breath alongside them.
Felix's mind warred with itself, logic and instinct tangled in an impossible knot. He knew he should arrest Hyunjin right here, right now. Yet, as they stood inches apart, something inside him hesitated.
"You're not going to call for backup, are you?" Hyunjin asked quietly.
Felix didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Hyunjin's lips curved into a faint, almost melancholic smile. "I thought so."
Without another word, Hyunjin turned away, stepping back into the shadows as if he belonged to them. Felix's heart thundered in his chest as he watched him go, torn between duty and a strange, undeniable pull.
"Wait," Felix called, surprising even himself.
Hyunjin paused but didn't turn around.
"Next time," Felix said, forcing strength into his voice, "I will catch you."
A low chuckle escaped Hyunjin, soft and rich. "Then I'll be waiting."
And just like that, he vanished into the darkness, leaving Felix alone with nothing but the echo of his footsteps and the lingering trace of something he couldn't quite name.
Not yet.
But soon.

Part two soon~
