L U C A S

I walk in a see a bunch of teenager either drunk and dancing or drunk and making out. Riley, Caleb, and I walk towards the food and drinks. Caleb takes a cup on lemonade and makes a weird face when he takes a sip of it.

"Hey Riley the lemonade is spiked so I would suggest that you don't drink it," he warns Riley.

"Thanks Caleb," she smiles.

"Hey Lucas, wanna talk?" He asks me.

"Um, sure," I answer. We both go somewhere that we can hear each other much better.

"Look cowboy, if you even try to make a move on Riley tonight, I swear you won't even remember anything tomorrow," he threatens.

"Woah, hold it there city boy, what makes you think that I'm going to make a move on her?" I ask him.

"I've been told by multiple people that you two had an unofficial thing back then and then one day you just decided to leave her," he explains.

"I had to leave, it wasn't because I didn't love her, because believe me I love her and she loved me," I tell him.

"Did you hear what you just said, she loved you meaning no longer in love with you. I mean I don't blame her, you left and she moved on. I'm pretty sure that you slept with every girl you could in Texas." He says. I then get mad and ball my fist but then I release them and took a big breath out.

Caleb must of noticed because he said, "oh we're you going to punch me? Here let me do the honors of starting this fight." He then pushes me to the floor and punches me. "Really Friar? You got muscles but you sure don't use them." If only he knew that fighting back would mean possibly losing Riley.

There is a crowd of people going around us taking pictures, videos, etc. By now I have a bloody nose and lip.

"Stop!" I hear a familiar voice. "Caleb stop!" She yells once more before he stops.

"Riley-" Caleb starts but get interrupted.

"Caleb just go home I'll talk to you tomorrow," Riley tells him and he leaves. "Lucas are you okay?" She asks.

"Yeah I am," I say trying to to get up.

"No you're not your bleeding," she says while helping me up.

"What's a little blood?" I say chuckling.

"Come on let's go home," she says and we walk to the apartment.

...

She rubs the wet cloth on my lip and I flinch.

"Come one Lucas stay still for me please," she says softly.

"Okay," I reply.

"What even happened back there?" She asks.

"Look princess, I don't want to tell you anything that will make you unhappy so all I'm going to say is taut we both said some things," I respond.

"Lucas-" she starts but I interrupt.

"I'm going to go shower," I say getting up.

"Okay," she shrugs.

...

I wake up this morning and just lay there. I then hear my door open.

"Hey Lucas are you up?" I hear the voice of the pretty brunette.

"No," I say.

"Well now I know that you're up. Let's go do something," she smiles.

"Like what?" I ask.

"How about Central Park?" She suggests.

"Yeah let me just change," I reply.

"YAAAAAY!" She says it the same way she said it in middle school. I chuckle at her quirkiness. We just sit looking at each other.

"I should go so that you can change," she says and leaves my room.

"Yeah," I respond. I walk to my closet and grab a t-shirt and a pair of jeans.

Once I finish changing, I walk out and knock on Riley's door. It takes a minute before I hear, "come in!"

I walk into the purple room and she looks beautiful, as always.

"So you ready?" She asks.

"Yeah," I reply.

"Let's go!" She says and marches out of her bay window. I couldn't do anything but chuckle. Then I went outside of her window. She lead the way to Central Park.

"So, how's Charlie Gardner? I've noticed that he hasn't been so clingy around you," I mentioned.

"Oh yeah," she laughs nervously. "He's sort of going out with Missy now. I guess since I started dating Caleb he realized that he won't have a chance." She says.

"Oh wow," I say surprised.

"Hey Lucas can I ask you something?" She asks me.

"Go ahead," I reply.

"Do you ever imagine what it would be like if you didn't leave to Texas?" She asks. My eyes go wide.

Have I ever thought about that? Of course I have. We would be together and everything will be fine, except for the part that Charlie probably wouldn't be dating Missy.

"Yeah I have," I answer.

"What did you imagine?" She asks.

"Well you know, we would be us but stronger, you know?" I respond.

"Yeah. I think that if you didn't leave, I wouldn't be dating Caleb. He would just be a guy that goes to school with me." She says.

"Speaking of school, does your dad still connect history to our lives?" I ask.

"Yeah always have, always will," she answers.

"Good, he's a good teacher, none of the teachers in Texas do that," I reply.

"Yeah history is probably my favorite class because it's actually interesting," she smiles.

"Yeah it is," I respond.

"How about you?" She asks.

"What about me?" I ask confused

"School in Texas, how was it?" She asks.

"Oh, you know, it was...school," I say awkwardly.

"Wow best description in the world," she says sarcastically. We share a laugh. "But really, how was it?" She asks.

"Well I had straight A's, Physical Education is my best class, I was on the football team, and yeah." I respond.

"That's cool," she smiles.

Once we made it to Central Park, we just looked around.

"Follow me," Riley says holding on to my wrist. We walk to big rocks on top of each other. "Let's climb them," she says.

"Okay," I reply. The brunette starts climbing the rocks. I stand there watching her climb. She looks down and sees me still on the ground.

"Are you going to climb or what?" She laughs.

"Haha very funny," I say sarcastically. "I'm coming up," I start climbing the rocks up.

"Okay slow po-" she started but she started slipping. I climbed higher and got to where she was and I grabbed her waist and helped her up. "T-thanks Lucas," she stuttered.

"No problem Riles," I replied.

When we got to the top of the rocks, we just stood their looking at the lake.

"You know, this is my favorite view to see," she smiles.

"I can see why, its beautiful and the breeze with the wind makes it even better," I add.

"Yeah, so, maybe one day all of us- Maya, Zay, Farkle, Isadora, Caleb, you, and I- can go on a little camping trip one day," she suggests.

"Yeah, that would be fun," I reply.

"So, tell me more about Texas," she smiles at me. She keeps on telling me to talk about my life in Texas and that phrase keeps on crossing through my mind.

real friends listen

She wants to listen to me. She wants to fix our friendship, just like me.

"You know what Riley? I think I've talked enough to know that you're a real friend. Now, it's my turn. its my turn to listen." I smile.

"Well what do you want to know?" she asks.

"Um, well how about how you and Caleb met." I reply.

"Well I met him on the subway and Maya went up to him and said, 'Hi, I'm Maya. You're really cute. We should hang out sometime. You make me happy. You don't pay enough attention to me. This isn't working out. We can still be friends. Not really.' Then, she pushed me into his lap and I was so nervous but then we ended being best of friends," she laughs. I know what she's talking about.

"That's when we first met," I chuckle.

"I know, I just wanted to make you laugh." She explains.

"Well plan succeeded, but really, how did you two meet?" I ask.

"Well, I was sitting alone at lunch for once because Maya was sick for the first time and Farkle was doing whatever Farkle was doing. Caleb walked up to me and asked if he could sit with me and we were just talking and yeah," She explains.

"Nice."

"Yeah."

"Yeah."

...

After that, it was silent. Not the awkward kind of silence, the comforting kind. She lays her head on my shoulder and we stay there. We stayed at the park for the rest of the day- talking, laughing, etc. I was soon dark outside and we were laughing about something Riley had said.

"It's pretty dark, we should go back," I mention.

"Oh come on cowboy, I know that this isn't Texas, but, there is still things to do at night here." She playfully hits me.

"Okay fine, what do you exactly suggest city girl?" I ask her.

"Well we can walk around, maybe to Time Square." She suggests.

"Yeah, lets do that," I smile. We started walking around looking at all the lights. "What's your favorite time of the day?" I ask.

"3:00," she answers without hesitating.

"Why its that?" I ask.

"Because I come home and I'm in my room and I look at my window and I see the sunlight hit my carpet and I walk over and touch it and it's really warm and just for that moment i forget about everything bad," she explains. I couldn't help but just look at her. "Why are you staring at me?" she giggles.

"I-it's just w-what you just said," I stutter. Real smooth Friar.

"It wasn't that interesting," she looks down.

"Are you kidding me? The way you explained it, the details, you made it sound so-"

"Thank you, Lucas," she interrupts me.

"You're welcome," I smile. We walk more and we find Time Square.

"Wow, I haven't seen this place in person in a long time," I comment.

"Great, so I took you to the right place," she smiles.

"What now?" I ask.

"I don't know," her face then lights up, "give me your phone." she demands. Oh no, giving a girl your phone is never a good idea. Just kidding. I hand her my phone and she puts in the passcode.

"How do you know my passcode?" I ask furrowing my eyebrows.

"I watched you type it in before and I remembered it." She answers. She heads over to the camera app. "I'm going to take a picture of you," she says.

"Okay," I reply. I walk in front of the rear-facing camera on my phone. I put my hands in my pockets and smile.

"Come on Friar, look more interested," Riley playfully complains.

"Okay okay," I pose with my hands making it look like I'm holding Time Square.

"Great!" She exclaims. "Now, selfie together," she announces. I chuckle and walk over to her and get in front of the camera and smile with her. Then, that's when I take a risk. I kiss her cheek and she doesn't pull away she just takes a picture. "One second, let me just send these to me," she says sending them to her.

"You didn't exactly pull your face away from me when I kissed your cheek," I bring up confused.

"Well it was platonic, I mean remember when I said that we were like brother and sister? Well, I don't feel exactly like that because I promised Auggie that I wouldn't but, you're the closest thing to an older brother to me." She explains.

"Oh, great. I didn't want you to think that I was trying to interfere with you and Caleb," I say nervously.

Do I still have feeling for her? Yes. But, do I want to ruin something that makes her happy? No.

"I don't, Lucas. Don't worry." She smiles and hands me my phone back. We make our way back to the subway to get back home. While we were in the subway, I got a notification.

"rileymatthews tagged you in a photo"

I look at the photo. She posted the one that I'm kissing her cheek.

"Good day with the closest thing I have to an older brother <3"

I smile at the post and the subway comes to our stop. We walk off the subway and make our way t the apartment. We walk through the bay window and make our way to the kitchen and see Mrs. Matthews making dinner.

"Where have you two been?" She asks.

"We were at Central Park, then we went to Time Square." Riley responds.

"Nice. How was it to see everything again, Lucas?" Mrs. Matthews asks me.

"Um, it was cool. Everything is different from Texas, although I already knew that but, it was nice to see everything again."

"Great." She smiles.

...

They rest of the night went by normal, we had dinner and went back to sleep.
