Chapter 8
-
I stopped walking down the dirt road, hearing loud noises from the cabin ahead of me.
I recognized it as Merle and Daryl's home, and I heard Merle saying something about his old man living there once.
"What's going on?" I asked, walking up on the porch to see Merle.
"Damn bitch. Ya ruined everything!" Merle yelled, shoving me against the side of the house.
"I didn't know Jake was undercover until two weeks ago!" I argued.
"Bullshit." He snapped, slapping me.
"Daryl! Take her inside and keep her there." Merle ordered as Daryl walked out on the porch.
"Let me go!" I yelled.
"It's time to have some fun, Daryl. I'm goin' to jail anyway so my as well make it worth my while." Merle spat as he pushed me into Daryl.
Daryl grabbed my arms and pulled me into the cabin.
Daryl pushed me on the floor before Merle came in.
I screamed out, taking a kick to my ribs.
"Dumb bitch." Merle spat before pulling me off of the floor.
I stumbled back after receiving a punch in the face.
I hit the floor after another punch and took two more kicks.
"Enough, Merle. You're gonna kill her!" Daryl yelled.
"That's the plan, lil brother!" Merle declared.
I rolled over onto my side and felt more tears stream down my cheeks.
"Ya wanna go to jail for five years or fifty?" Daryl asked.
I began coughing and felt blood drip down my nose.
"Take her to my room." Merle ordered Daryl.
"Get up!" Merle yelled.
I managed to get on my hands and knees before pulling myself up off of the floor.
Daryl harshly pulled me down the hall and pushed me down on Merle's nasty bed.
Merle walked in and grabbed my shirt and ripped it open.
I began freaking out, realizing he was going to rape me.
I kicked him as hard as I could and tried to run out of the room before he grabbed me and punched me again.
"Merle, don't." Daryl ordered.
I slid down the wall before he grabbed me and pushed me into his bed.
"Merle, she's already hurt, let her go." Daryl demanded.
I looked down, finding two of my ribs pooched out and moving abnormally every time I breathed.
Merle wrapped his hands around my throat before crawling on top of me.
I couldn't breathe and I began feeling lightheaded.
"Merle!" Daryl yelled.
"Shut up!" Merle screamed, taking his hands off of my throat.
I looked to Daryl, desperately needing his help.
While Merle was distracted, I kneed him as hard as I could in the balls before he fell off of me.
I quickly stood up and ran out of the cabin.
"Get her!" Merle yelled.
The pain in my right side was so sharp it took my breath, but I had to get away.
I felt arms around my stomach and I screamed before Daryl pulled me into the shed.
"Please don't hurt me," I cried before he clamped a hand over my mouth.
He looked out of the shed through the cracks in the wall and Merle's voice got closer.
"Stay here," Daryl whispered before opening the door and stepping out.
"The damn bitch got away!" Daryl yelled.
"I have an idea of where she is." Merle stated before I heard his foot steps farther away.
"I'll search down by the creek." Daryl declared.
I heard the truck start up and drive away before Daryl walked back into the shed.
"Go." He ordered.
"What if he finds me on the road?" I asked.
Daryl took an ax from the wall of the shed before handing it to me.
"Go through the woods when you hear a vehicle." He replied.
"Why are you helping me?" I asked.
"You saved my ass the other night, now I'm saving yours." He answered.
I nodded and took the ax before leaving the shed.
I don't even know why I took the ax. I wouldn't be able to hurt someone, but I guess it was the feeling of safety of having the ax if I had to hurt someone to stay alive.
I kept my arm to my ribs to help stable myself as I began walking on the road.
I knew I told my family I would never be back there, but that was the only place I had to go and I needed somewhere to go right now.
-
I fell onto the porch of my old home after knocking on the door.
"Danielle? She's hurt!" Beth yelled.
Suddenly she knelt down beside me and pushed my hair out of my face.
"Daddy!" Beth screamed.
"Oh God, what happened?" Maggie asked.
I began feeling dizzy again and then everything went black.
-
I slowly opened my eyes, feeling something cool and damp on my forehead.
I looked around, finding that I was on the couch in the living room.
"We need to get her to the hospital." Maggie stated.
"No." I mumbled.
"Sweetie, what happened?" Annette asked, kneeling down beside me.
After telling her everything, her eyes glossed over and she grabbed my hand.
"Let's get to the hospital." She declared.
"No. We can't. The hospitals are full with people that have the virus." I replied.
"Beth, help your sister get a shower." Annette ordered.
"Yes, ma'am." Beth replied before helping me up from the couch.
"You're letting me stay?" I asked, looking to my father.
He slowly nodded his head before leaving the living room.
Annette gave me a smile before following him.
-
I looked up at my father, watching as he dabbed the cuts on my face with a rubbing alcohol.
"I'm sorry for all the things I said and done." I mumbled.
He stayed quiet and continued to clean the cuts on my face.
"I let you down. I disappointed you. I deserve what I got today. I deserve worse." I choked.
"Get some rest." He mumbled after finishing cleaning my cuts.
I nodded and stood up from the couch after he left the room.
I walked upstairs and into my room before breaking down.
I slid down the wall and put my head in my hands.
I hadn't been in here since Jake stayed the night.
He didn't deserve what happened to him, and it didn't seem real.
Whatever is happening with this stupid virus is extremely scary, and thinking of the future is even more scary.
-
I stood in the living room, watching the news with my entire family.
"Everyone, please get home with your families. This is a world-wide emergency. Stay home, lock your doors, and check on your neighbors!" The news anchor ordered while standing up from her glass desk.
"Someone call your dad!" Annette ordered.
"Already did. He's on his way." Maggie replied.
"My car is back?" I asked, looking outside.
"Your father got it fixed yesterday." She answered.
It had been two weeks since Merle tried to rape me and my father let me home.
"I'll go to the clinic and make sure he's actually leaving. We all know how he is." I stated.
"Be careful." Annette called out as I walked outside.
-
I looked down at my phone, finding that I had no cell service.
I looked up, looking at all of the stopped cars in front of me.
All of the lanes were backed up and no one was getting through either way.
I got out of my car, finding Shane talking to someone two cars ahead of me.
"Shane?" I asked.
He turned around and looked at me before I ran up to him.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"The army is taking the city out. They don't care if they're killing our people or killing those things." He stated.
"Shane!" I heard Lori exclaim as she ran up.
I looked to her son, who's name I remembered as Carl, and noticed how scared he was.
I was on the verge of having a panic attack, so I can't imagine how scary this was for him.
"Sweetie, are you thirsty?" A woman with short hair asked me.
"No. Thank you, though." I replied.
"Stop asking people if they're thirsty. We save it for us." A man snapped before taking the water from her hand.
I watched as Carl and the little girl who looked to be around his age started playing.
"Oh God, Shane." Lori cried.
Then it hit me. Rick was still in the hospital in Atlanta, and that's exactly where the army helicopters were shooting up the city.
I briefly closed my eyes, hoping my father made it home safely.
"You by yourself?" Shane asked.
"Yeah. I was on my way to get my dad home." I answered.
-
I walked around the quarry, meeting the people with us.
There was no use trying to walk home and risk getting killed, and there was no way I was getting my car through all that traffic so I was stuck with the people I met on the highway, along with Shane, Lori, and Carl.
I looked over to Lori who stormed off through the woods, and Shane soon went after her.
"Hey, Dani. We just fixed some fish. Are you hungry?" Dale, an older man asked.
He was very nice and he made things seem comfortable around here.
"No, not really." I answered.
"Tell me about your family." He stated, motioning for me to sit down beside him.
-
I turned my flashlight off and put my book down, watching as someone unzipped my tent.
"Excuse you?" I asked, finding Shane crawling into my tent.
"Your light is keeping me up." He stated.
"I'm trying to read." I replied, turning my light back on and looking at the newspaper.
He zipped my tent close before taking my newspaper.
"What are you doing?" I asked as he inched closer to me.
"I'm cold in that tent all alone." He replied.
"That's not my problem." I replied.
He took the flashlight from my hand before turning it off.
I was taken by surprise as he pressed his lips to mine and put his hand in my hair.
"Just because the world ended and I'm not good at keeping secrets, I'm going to let you in on a little secret." He mumbled after pulling away.
"What?" I muttered.
"I've been waiting to do that since I met you." He replied.
I rolled my eyes, wondering how many times he'd said that to girls.
I connected our lips before his hands moved to my shirt.
