28 ~ Calum

A scorching anger held my stomach in its fiery hands, my face was turning red from the heated blood in my cheeks. My jaw began to ache from being locked and I tapped my foot in impatience.

I was hidden in a small closet, the only thing keeping me from breaking the freaking door down, was the small hand enclosed in my own.

Valerie's sent invaded the small, dark space we were held in, her head just under my nose, I could smell the sweet coconut sent of her shampoo and it calmed me slightly.

We were watching through the small rectangular Windows that are placed in school doors, and the scene before me made me sick.

I shifted slightly as Thomas was shoved against the lockers roughly, his books sprawled across the deserted hall.

Valerie lent into me, her face downcast with a frown as she watched. We couldn't hear what they were saying, just muffled yells and laughs.

My face twitched with emotion, I was angry and devastated. Scared yet determined. I was confused but, some how it made sense at the same time.

My anger wasn't only at the blonde who was pinning my brother to the lockers, it was at the world, at myself.

Why is all this happening? Why can't we have a normal family without unnecessary bullying or peer pressure?

My world was not only flipped upside down, but it was rolling out of control down a mountain with sharp edges jabbing at me everywhere I turn.

I watched the interaction on the other side of the door and feel immensely disappointed with myself.

Where was I when all this would happen? How long has this been happening? How could I have been friends with Seth and been so - so self-absorbed that I never even knew he would terrorize Thomas?

I took a shaky breath, watching as Seth turned his head so sharply his neck might have snapped. Too bad it didn't.

Seth jumped back, his friends scattering, yet Thomas slyly stuck his foot out, causing Seth to stumble slightly, slowing him down for just the right amount of time.

Because just then, Mr. Wilson marched down the hall, his face set with deep anger. His eyes latched onto the blonde git before Seth could race away. It was like watching one of those old silent movies, guessing what was happening by the actions of the people before me.

Thomas gathered his books as Mr. Wilson fumed at Seth, who's cool demeanor was long gone.

His face paled greatly, cheeks turning red and he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. Mr. Wilson must have said  something that upset him, because he shook his head violently, holding up his hands slightly as if to say 'I back off'

Mr. Wilson gestured to Thomas who rocked on his heels, uncomfortable with whatever they were talking about.

Seth nodded his head slightly and said something, to which Thomas looked to the door that hid us behind it for a minute before turning back to the two.

After a few more moments, Mr. Wilson left, leading Seth away with him and leaving Thomas alone in the hall.

Only then did I burst through the door.

"Thomas!" I call out, stumbling through the door way, tripping slightly over a dustpan.

I yanked him by the shoulders and into my embrace, him being half an inch taller than me, his nose hit right between my eyebrows sharply, causing my to recall back, pressing my fingers to the spot. Thomas also stepped back slightly, gripping his nose. His lips cracked in a small smile, a short burst of laughter leaving them.

His eyes crinkled with the upward twitch of his lips and his laughter pulled some out from the back of my own throat. It's like a cup overflowing, I couldn't contain it.

Valerie watched us with curiosity, as we bent slightly trying to suppress the laughs convulsing through our stomachs.

"Why..." I breath out, my shoulders jerking and eyes tearing with joy, "why are we- lau-aughing so hard?" I choke out, joy pouring from my lips.

Thomas looked at me, his eyes sparkling and he shook his head, "we're happy," he giggles, closing his eyes. "We haven't laughed- really laughed in so long," he breaks of to catch his breath.

"- that we just can't stop," I smile at him, finishing his sentence for him as he glanced to Valerie.

She was smiling at was warmly, and muttered something along the lines of "...such idiots...", however there was no venom him her words.

I almost forgot she was here, until I followed Thomas' gaze and suddenly I remembered why I had so forcefully pulled his nose into my forehead, and like that the last giggle left my lips, the smile slowly fading.

Valerie frowned, "well, that's the look every girl wants to see when a boy looks at them," she rolls her eyes, "especially when the smile just falls of his face," Her voice dipped in exasperation, but with a playful ring.

I rolled my eyes, but couldn't keep the smile from turning my lips up once again with the snide remark, " you should be used to it by now."

Thomas gasped, placing a hand over his chest. "Dang, did you feel that burn, Val?"

I chuckle and high five him as she huffed, crossing her arms over her chest with a small, playful, "whatever,"

Then the silence fell as if someone had just covered us with a thick wool blanket.

"Thomas..." I started again, much quieter this time. "I didn't know...I'm sorry," I tilted my face to the floor, the cold chill of shame crawling up my back.

"Calum, it's okay-" He began, laying a hand on my shoulder, I shrugged it off, facing him while cutting him off with "How? How is it okay when I was hanging out with him and he was messing with you like that?" I breath out, my voice close to wavering.

"How could you have known ?" Valerie interjects, "Thomas is a smart person, if he wanted you to find out then you would have," she says softly, glancing to Thomas.

Thomas nodded slightly, shifting his bag on his shoulder. " I didn't want you to know, I didn't want you to worry or think I was weak..." he looked to the lockers behind me, unable to maintain eye contact.

I shook my head, and small frustrated huff blew from my nose. "Thomas, I never have- or will- think your anything close to weak!" I say a bit harshly, annoyed at how he won't open his eyes and see what I do.

Valerie laced her fingers through mine and I took a deep breath. Thomas looked down to our hands and I swear I saw his eyes flicker to Valerie's before they landed on mine.

"I'm going to kill him, Thomas, I promise-"

"No. I don't want that, just leave him alone." Thomas shrugged, his book bag falling against his back with a small thud.

I gaped at him. "What do you mean? It's like the whole death penalty thing," Valerie straightened at the mention of this, "he deserves to be punished-"

"It's not like that, there's something missing here. He- he apologized just a moment ago, and I sounded pretty real," he trailed off in thought.

I shook my head, wondering how he could just leave someone be after everything he's done. "He was probably just saying that for Mr.Wilson," Valerie reasoned.

Thomas nodded, "You see, that would be true, except Mr. Wilson didn't ask, or hear him. I don't think....I don't think I was supposed to hear it either." His eyebrows furrowed as he thought it over.

I looked to Valerie and she shrugged at my questioning glance.

"Oh, you weren't supposed to hear it," The voice made Thomas' head snap to the source, and I followed, my eyes landing on the one and only Peter Freaking Elliot.

The best friend- or shall I say- ex best friend of Seth.

What the heck?
