11 ~ Calum

Michael and I walk up the long drive way to Jess' house excitement rushing through our veins.

"I don't know if she's gonna be able to top last years party." Michael says, opening the front door, giving Tyler a fist bump.

"Yo yo! I didn't know you were going to be here!" Tyler smiles at Michael, nobody was used to seeing him again yet.

"What and miss Jess' party? No way Jose" the he laughs, before gasping and roughly pulling me to the side, frantically pointing to the living room.

My eyes follow his finger and I can feel my own jaw slack at the sight before me.

Jess was in her usual outfit before her parties. A modest dress, that way her parents didn't have one clue their 'perfect angel' was having a hard core party. There where not flashing lights, music or drinks...yet.

But what has me so shocked was Jess' small hands intertwined with Luke's, she was looking up at him intently, his head nodding slightly to whatever she was saying.

Then, she stood on her tip-toes, whispering something in Luke's ear, making him stiffen, and watch her breathlessly as she walks away.

"Damn" I whistle under my breath walking up to the blue eyed boy.

"Bro!" Michael swings his arm over Luke's shoulders. "I told you she was into you" he laughs.

"You saw that?" Luke asks, sitting on the floor beside the coffee table, his eyes looking around the room.

"Who didn't." I shrug, watching Luke's already pink cheeks turn a bright red.

"Look! Jess' parents are about to leave" Michael says excitement dripping from his words.

I watch as Jess' dad looks around the house, a stern look on his face before give Jess a kiss on the cheek. As soon a He and his wife walk out the door and drive down drive away, Jess looks out the window to make sure the cost is clear.

"Let's get this party started!" She yells, causing everyone to cheer.

Before I could even blink, the lights were off and a song loud enough to shake the walls began to play.

Bright party lights flash to the song and people were bringing coolers filled to the brink with all types of liqueur out of the closets.

"This is Fucking insane!" I yell, already enjoying the party. I grab a beer from someone handing them out, leaving Michael and Luke.

I wonder the place for a bit, saying hi to a few people here and there, before feeling a light tap on my shoulder.

"Hey, I didn't think that I'd see you here." I smile at Valerie, her hair was pulled into a pony tail with a small braid following the side of her head, black and red intertwined with each other.

"What? the new kid can't get invited to the 'cool kids' party?" She laughs, her eyes squinting at the edge. I shake my head. "No, that's not what I meant. I just didn't think partying was.. your thing." I shrug.

She raises an eyebrow. "Oh, that's right. I completely forgot that you've known me for... ah, lets say 7 hours, and you know every thing there is about me ." She shifts her weight, placing a hand on her hip.

I scoff. " I do. Don't under estimate my powers." I take a sip of my drink to hide my giggle as I wiggle my eye brows at her.

"Okay, Go head then." Valerie crosses her arms. I blink at her. "What do you mean?" I tilt my head to the side, puzzled. " I mean tell me something about myself, since you know everything."

"Oh...uh" I look around. "Well you don't like drinking, and much rather prefer Sprite or a nice relaxing Coke." I gesture to her empty hand. If she had wanted a drink, she would have gotten one by now.

She gives me a small round of applause. "Good job. What else you got?"

"Well. Your favorite color is red." I say, stating the obvious. Her small smile falters. "Man, you were going good for a second, but alas all good things come to an end my friend. Red is not my favorite color."

I squint my eyes. "What? It has to be, you have red hair, a red book bag, I mean, it's pretty obvious."

She looks at me, before closing her eyes and slowly opening them again. "My favorite color is grey." She sighs.

"Why grey?" I ask, confused as to why such a bright girl likes such a dull color. My drink finally starts to kick in, my fingers tingling and my face and ears warm from the alcohol.

"Because its the perfect mix between white and black. The perfect balance between light and dark." She shrugs, leaning against the wall.

"Huh" I say, looking at her. "I guess I don't know as much as a thought." I say, suddenly even more intrigued with her.

She opens her mouth to reply, but the vibrating from my back pocket causes me to cut her off.

"Sorry, but I gotta take this." I say glancing at the screen. "It's my brother." I roll my eyes.

"Thomas?" She asks, looking at my phones. I nod, tapping the green button and pressing the small device against my ear.

"Yellow." I say, the liquor in my system making my attitude a bit more bubbly than normal.

"It's just grades!" I hear Thomas' voice say shakily.

"Just grades? Are you fucking shitting me right now Thomas? You sound like Calum, and you and I both know you don't want to be like him". I flinch at my fathers words, my teeth pulling on my bottom lip and my eyes fall to my shoes.

The effect the drink has given me was gone, I start to slightly pace in the small corner I was standing in.

Thomas mumbles something that I can't comprehend, causing me to shove my finger against my other ear to block out the sound for the party.

"Speak up, son!" My dad shouts, mumbling is a pet peeve of his.

"How can you talk about your son like that?!" He shouts back, his voice suddenly stronger than my dads had been.

I freeze, too shocked to move, the phone pressed to my ear hard enough to make my hand shake.

A mix of feelings overwhelm me, bringing unexpected tears to my eyes. I can't even tell what I'm feeling, I just know it's strong.

Muffled shouts and loud sounds make there way through the the phone, but I can't hear, whatever song had been platings  was kicked up.

Forgetting about Valerie and everyone else, I force my way through the crowd at to the door, earning a few 'watch where you're going's as I shove people to the side.

"Thomas!" I say as I jump through the door way and off Jess' porch. He shouldn't stand up for me, it will just cause him more trouble.

"- I can't believe you would talk to your father like this Thomas, I though you were the smart one ?" My mothers stern voice is all I can here.

"But Cal-" he was cut off, a loud sound echoing through the small device, followed by a unsettling silence.

I breaking into a jog to Michaels car parked a few houses down the street. My hands shake as I try to shove the keys into the ignition.

My phone balances between my shoulder and ear, listening intently. "Thomas?" I call out again.

"Calum?" His voice comes through, not nearly as strong as it was a few minutes ago.

"You called Calum? Are such a fucking little bitch that you have to whine for your brother to come save you?" My dads voice booms.

"I'm coming, hang on bud." I say in the calmest voice I could muster. The line went dead.

"Fuck me" I breath in, the light in front of my turning red. Anxious. Scared. My fist connects with the dashboard as a scream for the light to turn green.

The wheels squeak as the light changes color, and my car speeds down the street. My neighborhood, only 7 minutes away, but each minute seemed like an hour.

How come this always happens? Why can't I just have a normal family with normal punishments? Why do I have to be this scared for my brother?

I pull into the drive way, jumping out of the car as soon as the keys were out.

The door swings open, my feet pound up the stairs, and into Thomas' room. Dad. Thomas. Me.

I couldn't hear what my father was saying, all I knew was he was advancing towards Thomas much to aggressively for my liking.

It was like I was in auto pilot. I was suddenly in between Thomas and Dad. Dad's large hand slaps my arm which was swung in front of Thomas petrified face.

I hiss, using my elbow to push Dad back before grabbing Thomas' wrist, pulling him in front of me before pushing him into my room, making sure I was behind him that way if dad grabbed anyone, it would be me.

Luckily, we made it to the saftey of my room, his fists connecting to the door instead of us.

I fall against my cluttered desk, rubbing my sore arm, panting.

Thomas, he was standing in the middle of my room, staring at the wall blankly.

"Thomas?" I ask, barely a whisper. His eyes snap to mine. I gasp as his arms were suddenly around my body, his head on my shoulder, body shaking with sobs.

For a moment, I just stand there. We haven't hugged in so long, it's a foreign feeling. I wrap my arms around him.

"I understand." He chokes out.

"What do you mean?"

He look pulls back, our blood shot eyes connecting. " I understand how you feel now. I get it. I'm sorry I never did anything, I just though you were strong, and that it never really hurt you." He says, bitting his lip. " But now I know you just turned it all off."

I smile through the tears gathering in my eyes. " Well, Now we can do this together, like we used to?"

He nods, wiping his face with the back of his hand, a small smile forming in his face. "Yea. That would be spectacular."

It feels like we were 8 again, the picture perfect twins.

Perfectly imperfect.
