Chapter 23

One Day Until The Wedding

As excited as your mother is for the wedding, she's been very quiet recently, notably around you.
It's evident that she believes that it's you to blame for her reputation officially being ruined, but you don't mind. She deserved it.

Wedding preparations are really intense at the moment, especially with the rehearsal dinner tonight.

"Wedding disaster!" Abigail bursts into your room and holds her hand up to her forehead, attempting to rub the obvious stress away.

"What happened?" You look up from the book that you were just reading.

"Okay, so, Stacey was meant to call the caterers and tell them about the date change but she didn't and now we won't have any food for the rehearsal dinner or the actual wedding and they sent us the wrong cake!" Abigail explains, pacing over to your bed. "They sent us a penis cake made for a bachelorette party!"

"Pahaha can I see it?" You burst out laughing.

"Y/N, this is serious!"

"Okay then. What do you want me to do about it?"

"First of all, be more panicked. This is your wedding and so far the only things the guests can eat is dick!"

"Hey, it's a first for you."

"Stop joking around!"

"There's not much else I can do. Just fix it." You shrug and open your book again.

"How?"

"I don't know. Find some last minute caterers. Order Chinese food."

"Order Chinese food? Are you serious?"

"Dead serious. Chinese food is good."

"When do you ever try that disgusting, greasy slop?"

"It's not as greasy and disgusting as-"

"What are we meant to do?"

"You know we have a butler, right? Just get him to cook something."

"One guy can't cook a meal for several hundred people in a few hours!"

"Make it something simple, call a catering company today and maybe someone will have enough time to cook a good meal for the actual wedding."

"That's... Not a bad idea."

"See, not just a block of wood." You grin and knock on your head, which hurts more than you intended it to. "Owie!"

"The reason behind you being the first to get married is beyond me." Abigail shakes her head and walks away.

"Thanks!" You say sarcastically and roll your eyes.

"Hey, Y/N, whatcha doing?" Darren places a hand on your doorway and uses it to lean all his body weight on.

"Reading. Why do you care?" You ask, not looking up from your book.

"I was wondering if you wanted to do something... Like... With me." He asks in a slightly awkward tone.

"Why would I want to do that?" You ask, putting your book down. "Why would you want to do that?"

"We're gonna be married tomorrow. I think it makes sense that we at least try to get used to each other."

"Hm. What did you have in mind?"

"Lunch?"

"Where?"

"I don't know. A restaurant? We don't have to eat much though, there will be plenty food at the dinner tonight."

"Yeah, don't get your hopes up on that." You tell him before standing up. "I'm game. Let's go."

"You're game?"

"It means I'm down with it."

"You're down with it?"

"Ugh. Let's just go."

.............................................................

You and Darren decided to go to a restaurant and, you must admit, you're not having a totally awful time.

"I can not believe I missed that!" You laugh after Darren tells you a story of what happened while you were staying with Phil for a week.

Apparently, everyone was out having dinner and the waitress was flirting with your father. This greatly angered your mother. Supposedly, she shoved the woman, kicked her and hit her with a chair.
You definitely wish you had seen that tantrum.

"The woman was crying!" Darren  chuckles.

"That's fucking hilarious!" You giggle.
It's not that hard to imagine your mother doing that.

"Did you guys want anything else?" The waitress asks.

"Just the check." Darren tells her.

"Split it?" You ask.

"No way, I'll pay." Darren insists.

"It's no problem at all for me to pay. I'm paying."

"No, I'm paying."

"No, I'm paying."

"I'm paying!"

"Why are you being so persistent on paying?"

"Because if I don't, I'll look like a pussy."

"How?"

"The man always pays. I'm paying."

"The man does not always pay. Besides, you don't seem like the guy to pass up an opportunity for a free meal." You say as the waitress places the bill on your table, which you immediately grab hold of.

"Give it here!" Darren attempts to grab the bill from you.

"No! I'm paying."

"Why? You women are the type to leech off of us men. You're not meant to pay, just like us men aren't meant to cook."

"You sexist little shit." You tut as you pull out your purse. "I'm paying."

"No you're not!"

"Yes I am!"

"No you're not!" Darren's voice ever so slightly begins to raise as you pull out some money and place it beside the bill.

"I clearly am."

"Give it here!" He attempts to grab the bill once more, but you pull it out of the way and stand up. "What the fuck at you doing?"

"Excuse me." You stop the waitress who is just walking by. "Here's the bill. Do not give it to him." You point out Darren before handing the bill over to the waitress.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Darren pouts angrily and stands up. "See you at the dinner." He says bitterly before storming out of the restaurant.

"Drama queen." You mumble under your breath as you roll your eyes.
You wait a small minute before exiting the restaurant as well, not really wanting to see Darren.
You're pleasantly surprised by someone else across the street.
After looking left and right, not for cars but for people who might bust you, you sprint across the street and try to catch up with Phil.

"Hi Philip!" You smile as you reach him.

"Hey Y/N." Phil smiles. "How's the wedding going?"

"Well... It's tomorrow." You sigh.

"And you're planning on going through with it?"

"I guess. What else am I meant to do?"

"Not marry him."

You look up at Phil. Into those blue pools that you haven't gazed upon in what feels like years.
You forgot how perfect he is, and you forgot how much you seem to love him.

"I can't do that." You tell him.

"Why not?"

"Because... I said that I'd do it. I have to do it."

"But why must you do it?"

"Because... Money."

"Money isn't everything, Y/N. You must know that by now."

"I know... But it's important in marriage."

"The only thing that's important in marriage is love. Do you love Darren?"

"No. But-"

"Then you shouldn't marry him. That's it. But hey, it's your life to ruin. We both know that you don't want to do this. Don't you ever let anybody make you do anything you don't want to do. No matter what."

This is short, crappy, I didn't read over this and I'm tired.
Sorry.
