•Chapter 17•

It's been three hours and three class periods have passed by and Ryder and I are still locked in this freaking janitor's closet.

Why did this have to happen on this specific day? Why did I have to get locked in a janitor's closet alone with Ryder Martinez on my birthday?

I was probably missing out on so many assignments. Ryder didn't seem to care about missing class, but I did. Right about now, I just want to kick the door down and run out, but due to my lack of strength that's unfortunately not gonna work.

And not only was I trapped in a five square foot closet with Ryder for three whole hours, the bleach and cleaning supplies fumes in the closet were aggravating my nose.

My mom hasn't texted me regarding skipping class yet, so I assume the teachers haven't called her. At least that's a bright side to the situation...

I'd say this birthday is off to a pretty bad start.

I sit with my legs criss-cross in an uncomfortable corner on the floor in the closet as I read the Harry Potter book Ryder just gave me.

"This is the worst birthday ever," I mumble under my breath, flipping to the next page of the book. I was already halfway through the book and he literally just gave me the thing three hours ago.

"How could you say that? It's only eleven o'clock a.m. The day has barely started." Ryder states.

I look up from the book and give Ryder a sideways glance. He sits on the floor in the corner of the wall next to mine, which was a couple of feet away. "This is all your fault." I mention, looking back down at my book.

"Oh, but I see you're enjoying my present over there," Ryder says, pointing to the book I'm reading.

I scowl. "Just because I enjoy your present doesn't mean it's not your fault."

"How is this my fault?" Ryder asks, crossing his arms over his chest.

I furrow my eyebrows and close the book, slamming it on the floor. "Well, you dragged me in here and closed the door... just because you didn't want anyone to see you give me a gift."

Ryder shrugs his shoulders. "We both know I'm embarrassed to be seen with you."

I shoot a glare towards Ryder and shake my head. "Okay, if you're so embarrassed to be seen with me, why did you get me the freaking birthday present in the first place!" I yell. Ryder opens his mouth to say something, but then quickly closes it, obviously lost for words. After a couple seconds of silence, I let out a short and small chuckle. "Yeah, that's what I thought."

"Whatever, you should be thanking me that you get a free day from classes." Ryder says.

"Are you kidding me?! We're locked inside a freaking closet!" I yell, getting up from the floor and standing to my feet. "What if no one opens the door? What if we're stuck here all night?"

"We're not gonna be stuck here all night," Ryder says, getting up from the floor as well. "Stop whining."

I glare at Ryder. "I am not whining."

"Yes you are," Ryder argues, taking a few steps toward me.

"No I'm not," I retaliate, raising an eyebrow as I back away from Ryder. Ryder continues to step closer to me, and I continue to back away until my back hits the wall.

My eyes widen when Ryder draws even closer to me. He's so close now that our bodies and faces are only centimeters apart and our breaths are mixing. "Yes you are." He says looking down at me. A chill goes down my spine when I feel his breath hit my face due to how close we are.

"No I'm not..." I trail, not knowing what else to say. My breath becomes unsteady because the closeness between Ryder and I is still kind of freaking me out. Ryder and I barely liked to be within three feet of each other, now we're barely three centimeters apart...

"Yes you—"

"We can do this all day," I interrupt raising my eyebrows.

"What if I don't want to do this all day?" Ryder asked, lowering his voice to a whisper. I slightly furrow my eyebrows, opening my mouth to say something, but then closing it, realizing I have nothing to say in response. "What if I want to do this all day."

I look at Ryder with confusion before he does the unthinkable.

Ryder suddenly lowers his head down to my level and crashes our lips together.

My eyes widen at his actions and I also think about pushing him away and slapping him. But I was way too confused to that. Ryder Martinez... literally just kissed me.

My brain instantly melts and a ton of questions immediately stream through my mind. This is all too much. First he gives me a present, then he kisses me? Why is he doing all of this? There must be some kind of confusion going on here, or this must be a dream. Because I can't seem to figure out why the hell he's kissing me!

After a few seconds of absolutely wrecking my brain, trying to figure out why the hell Ryder kissed me, I came to the conclusion that all the confusion was hurting my brain and I'd just come back to it later. For now, I just decide to go with the flow.

I then close one of my eyes, then I close the other one. I feel Ryder place both his hands on my hips, pulling my body closer to his. I decided to bring my arms up to wrap them around his shoulders.

Now, I know Ryder has had kissing experience, due to the many girls he's dated in the past, but I didn't know he was this good. What did he do? Practice on a watermelon? I mean, even thought the kiss was marginally uncomfortable, he was so great I couldn't find it in me to stop...

Ryder deepens the kiss by pressing his lips on mine with more aggression, causing my skin to heat up. While we were kissing, I could feel Ryder's heart beating steadily while mine beats rapidly. Ryder's soft lips moves in sync with mine as my fingers begin to uncontrollably run through his soft, dark hair.

Ryder and I were engrossed in our unusual, yet wondrous kiss when we heard the door open. "Um," when Ryder and I hear the voice, we instantly pull away from each other and look in the direction of the door.

My cheeks burn up when I see the janitor at the door, looking at us with a shocked expression.

Without another word, I bend down to to grab my Harry Potter book before storming out of the janitors closet. I was relieved to finally smell something other than that cleaning supplies...

I cannot believe that just happened. I am lost for words, and I don't even know what to think. It's like I have a thousand questions running though my head, but I'm so confused and dumbfounded, I don't even know what to think... Does that even make any sense?!

I stop in the midst of my quick walking and I wait for Ryder to catch up with me. When Ryder is next to me, I turn towards him and raise my eyebrows. "What the hell was that?" I ask him curiously.

Ryder looks at me for a while, his chest rising up and down as he still tries to catch his breath from the kiss. "I'm... I'm not sure," I glare at his response. "Just forget that ever happened."

"What?! Ryder, you just kissed me... like out of nowhere. You have to have some kind of explanation for that." I state, crossing my arms over my chest.

"Look, I don't know why I did that. Just forget that it ever happened!" Ryder yells in annoyance before walking past me and down the hallway. I watch him until he rounds a corner of the hallway and his figure his out of sight

I let out a huge sigh before walking down to my next class.

What the hell just happened to my life?!

•••

I stare up at my ceiling, trying to analyze the events that unfolded today.

Ryder Martinez... kissed me.

It was actually... good.

And not... sickening.

I don't know why I can't fathom that he actually kissed me, but he did. It happened.

My thoughts are cut off when I hear footsteps drawing closer to my room. I lift my back up from my bed and look to see that my mom is coming in. "How's the birthday girl doing?" My mom asks, walking further into my room and sitting on the edge of my bed.

"I'm fine." I say, putting a small smile on my face and leaning my back against my headboard.

My mom nods her head before he eyes cast over to my bedside table. She observes my new Harry Potter book this is resting on the nightstand. "Who got you that book?" She asks with a small smile.

"Um... Ryder," I state, looking down at my lap.

My mom furrows her eyebrows. "Ryder as in Ryder Martinez?"

"Yes,"

"He gave you that book? For your birthday?"

"Yes, mom," I repeat. I know it was unbelievable, but did she have to keep asking after I've already confirmed it was him?

"Wow, I... thought he hated you." My mom states.

"Uh huh," I say in an unamused tone. This was usually how talks with my mom went, she would try to have a nice "mother daughter" talk with me, but it would fail and end up being boring and uninteresting.

A couple seconds later, we hear the doorbell ring. "Robert can you get the door?!" My mom calls to my dad who is probably downstairs.

"I got it!" My dad responds.

My mom then turns toward me and smiles. I put a weird look on my face as I wait for her to say what she's going to say. "So how was school?" She asks curiously.

"It was okay..." I trail, leaving out the details about the janitor's closet.

My mom nods her head in interest. "Good, so—" my mom stops mid sentence when she hears footsteps coming into my room. She turns around to see Ryder slowly walking in. "Oh, hello Ryder." My mom greets.

"Uh hi... Mrs. Simmons." Ryder awkwardly replies, stepping further into the room.

"Well," my mom begins, getting up from my bed. "I'll leave you two alone." She says before walking out of my room. I watch until my moms figure is out of sight before looking up at Ryder.

Ryder walks toward my direction and sits on the edge of my bed where my mom was sitting before. "Hey," Ryder says.

"Hi..." I trail, looking at Ryder, wondering to he's going to say next.

"So uh, Natalie's having a party tonight, and I was thinking we could go."

Dammit... I thought he was going to discuss the kiss. Why do I want to think about and discuss this kiss so bad? Ryder said to forget it ever happened, so why can't I just let it go and forget about it?

Erasing the thought from my mind, I get back to the topic, trying to keep things as normal as we can, even though we just kissed a couple of hours ago.

Stop thinking about the kiss!

"Um..." I trail, pursing my lips and letting out a small chuckle. "Why would I want to go to Natalie's party?" I ask. Ryder knew I hated Natalie with a passion. Why would I want to step foot in her house while she throws a crazy party as she brags about it being "her" day.

"I don't know... I just thought..." Ryder becomes silent for a few seconds as he tries to conjure up something to say. "Do you want to go or not?!"

"Fine, I'll go..." I instantly respond.

Why did I just say that? I don't want to go to her stupid party! I don't want to be surrounded by all the stupid that worship at her feet!

"Okay goo, change into some better clothes and Coke down to my car." Ryder says, getting up from my bed snd exiting my bedroom.

I glare at him until he completely out of my room and walk to my closet. I said yes to the stupid thing, I guess I had to wear something decent for it.

I didn't know how they dressed at these types of parties, but without putting much thought into the outfit, I pull out a red skater dress that stops a little above my knees. I then pull out a pair of black high heels that weren't too tall, because trust me, if I even tried walking on high heels taller than three inches, my legs would be broken.

I walk over to my bedside table and grab my phone before exiting my room. "Mom, I'm going to a party." I state as I walk past her room.

"Okay... be careful," my mom calls through her closed door.

"Yeah, yeah," I mumbled before walking down my stairs and exiting the house. I walk down the driveway and get in the passenger seat of Ryder's white Challenger.

"Woah..." Ryder says as I step foot in the car, staring at me with astonishment.

"What?" I ask, putting a smirk on my face. "Like what you see?" I mock, flipping my hair and letting out a small laugh.

"Shut up," Ryder mumbles before putting his hands on the steering wheel and backing out of the driveway.

The entire ride between Ryder and I was silent. I would've much more comfortable if I hadn't keep thinking about that damn kiss. It was like I couldn't get it out of my mind. Ryder probably wasn't even concerned about it, but I was on the verge of pulling my hair out about it.

When Ryder and I arrived at Natalie's house, Ryder aimlessly parked on the side of the curb and got out the car. I followed behind him and walked up to the front door. The door was unlocked, which was stupid, so Ryder and I instantly walked right in.

Time for a torturous party.
