Chapter 11
Tris' POV
Tobias, the gang, and I (plus Bud and Harrison) are getting armed up so we can go find Eric as safely as possible. My mom agreed to watch Zach and Teigon is still in the hospital.
I put on a bullet-proof vest, a gun in my waistband, and some knives in the slits of my knife pants. Everyone else does something similar but puts the weapons in different places.
We split up into two groups to fit into two cars since Eric is no where to be seen in the compound. Tobias, Zeke, and Bud checked the cameras.
My group consists of:
-Christina
-Uriah
-Lynn
-Harrison, he's going to be driving.
Tobias' group consists of:
-Zeke
-Shauna
-Will
-Bud, he's going to be driving.
We are going to drive to the same place in two cars but look on different sides. We looked through many outside cameras, and found out that Eric is near candor but in fields of grass. We lost him eventually though.
"Tris." I look to my right and see Tobias all suited up.
"You need to be careful tonight. Eric has weapons. I don't want you to get hurt." he says and wraps his arms around me. "I don't know what I would do without you."
I hug him back, breathing in his scent. "Same goes for you. Stay safe."
I feel him nod and kiss my forehead. "I love you, Tris."
"I love you too."
'Alright lovebirds, break it up. We need to go." Harrison says while walking over.
We pull away and go our separate ways to the different trucks. I get in the back with my group, Harrison in the drivers seat.
"You really changed Four, you know. He's actually showing emotion, especially when he's with you." Harrison says to me.
It makes me happy knowing that I've change him in such a noticeable way.
The ride is bumpy and long. We left at around 5 pm and now it's 6:30 and already dark enough to need headlights. I guess that means winter is coming soon. But it isn't very cold yet, which is good.
We come to a very abrupt stop and we immediately get out, weapons out and ready to be fired at any given moment. I see Eric fighting Zeke and trying to get away. He punches Zeke in the temple and He falls to the ground. Unconscious. Uriah runs at him and tackles him to the ground. Eric elbows him in the temple and he's unconscious. Right when I'm about to run at him, he drops a metal cylinder and starts running. Smoke starts coming out of the cylinder so I can't see anything. But I can hear people dropping to the ground. I start walking around while trying to see, but failing. I kick something and kneel down to try and see what it is. I get close enough to see that it's Bud. He's unconscious.
The smoke clears out and I can see everyone but Tobias is unconscious. It was knock-out gas. But only worked on people who weren't divergent. Although I'm not sure about Uriah and Zeke, they were knocked out before the gas was released.
"Tris." Tobias says and starts toward me.
"I'm fine, we need to get them to gain consciousness though. We can't fight Eric without them. Plus, we aren't going to leave them here even if we did." I say and he nods.
I go to the truck and take some water with my extra shirt and make a part of the shirt damp. I start to rub it on Uriah's head and his eyes start fluttering open.
"What happened?" he asks while sitting up and grabbing his head.
"You were elbowed in the head by Eric." I say and move on to Christina.
She take a bit longer to wake up but when she does she was confused.
"Why was I unconscious?"
"Knock out gas was spread into the air. Four and I were able to get out of reach of it." I lie about the last part. I don't want her to know that we are divergent.
Tobias and I get everyone conscious and ready to go. We get back into the trucks and head in the direction that I last saw Eric go. Tobias' truck get's ahead of us and I can't even see it anymore. The sky is now a dark blue, some of the stars showing, so we use the extra headlights.
I start to hear something. I think I heard a series of gunshots. I'm not positive, but I'm worried on whether or not it was from our side or Eric. What if it was Tobias that got shot? What if anyone in our group got shot or killed.
"I'm sure they're all right." Harrison says. " That boy of yours knows how to take care of himself."
I nod, without conviction. Tobias can take care of himself, but in an attack, surviving is an accident. It doesn't take skill to stand in a place where no bullets find you, or to fire in the dark and hit a man you didn't see. It is all luck, or providence, depending on what you believe. And I don't know-have never known-exactly what I believe.
He's alright he's alright.
Tobias is alright
My hands tremble, and Christina squeezes my knee. Harrison steers us toward the rendezvous point, where she saw Zeke and Shauna. I watch the speedometer needle climb, then hold steady at seventy-five. We jostle on another in the truck, thrown this way and that way by the uneven ground.
"There!" Christina points. There is a cluster of lights ahead of us, just some pinpricks, like flashlights, and another round, like headlights.
We pull up close and I see him. Tobias sits on the hood of the other truck, his arm soaked with blood. Will stands in front of him with a first aid kit. Zeke and Shauna sit in the grass a few feet away. Before Harrison has stopped the truck completely, I open the door and get out, running toward him. Tobias stands up, ignoring Will's orders to stay put, and we collide, his uninjured arm wrapping around my back and lifting me off my feet. His back is wet with sweat, and when he kisses me, he tastes like salt.
All the knots of tension inside me come apart at once. I feel, just for a moment, like I am remade, like I am brand-new.
He's alright. We got Eric. He's alright.
