Big Steps
2 Days Later
"Why is nothing happening?" Samantha wailed in frustration, this was the slowest labour known to human kind in her eyes, she had been 4cm for what seemed like forever, watching all the women come and go with their babies made Samantha feel inadequate as a woman. Norman had stayed by her side throughout, not answering her back whenever she berated him for getting her in this mess and "for not knowing what sort of pain she was in" Norman made the mistake of explaining how being kicked in the crotch is similar to which Samantha and the midwife cut their eyes at him for.
--
"Samantha you are going to really need to push now, lets get this baby out!" The midwife encouraged as Samantha repositioned herself on the bed and squeezed onto Norman's hand as she pushed with all she had. Flopping back exhausted she cried "I cant do this anymore make it stop!" "You can do this you know you can sweetheart" Norman whispered encouragement he hated watching her go through this, he couldnt make the pain go away, nor could he take her place, he felt so helpless and it broke him, he really was falling for her more so now than ever.
Samantha sucked in some gas and air and let out one last push, pushing through the point of giving up, The midwife called for one last push and Samantha gave it all she had, screaming at the last hurdle. "You did it Sam" Norman beamed, kissing her lovingly on the lips before passing eachother awkward glances before the midwife gleefully passed Samantha their baby daughter.
Not caring about what just happened with Norman, Samantha smiled giddily as she gazed at her beautiful daughter. "I'll give you three some time alone" the midwife spoke gently tucking Samantha into the bed and leaving, softly shutting the door behind her. "She is beautiful Sam, im so proud of you" Norman whispered leaning in over the bed admiring the newborn. Samantha could see him well up as she passed the baby up to him for him to cradle "you okay?" She asked, she too welling up in the build up of emotions "yea" he lied, watching him smile so proudly at their daughter made Samantha feel happy but so very vulnerable, what was going to happen to them now?
"You are tired, i'll let you sleep and i'll go home, make a few calls and freshen up" he suggested gently placing the baby girl in the hospital crib, Norman looked uncertain at Samantha, he wasnt sure whether to kiss her or not, Samantha too looked at him wondering what his next move would be, and would she reciprocate the kiss if he did? The door gently closing took Samantha from her thoughts. He left.
"And so it begins" Samantha sighed letting tears fall, the prospect of being a single mother terrifying her and wondering if she had done the right thing being so dependant on Norman. Looking at her daughter she weakly smiled at her sleeping so peacefully. "I'll never leave you baby" she promised.
Painfully leaning down off the bed to her bag she picked her phone out and dialled Fiona.
"Congratulations girl!!! Im on my way up to you first thing!!!" Fiona squealed down the phone causing Samantha to look confused as to how she knew, "Norman phoned me about half hour ago, Sam he sounded so so proud and so in love! You get some rest and ill be up for cuddles in the morning" Fiona added before ending the call. Well this confused Samantha even more, was Norman proud he became a dad and he was going to stand by her and Samantha or was he just caught up in the moment of it all and he has another girlfriend she doesnt know about?
Samantha needed sleep, this was no good for her and as she looked at her daughter she knew she would be waking soon for a feed so it was now or never.
--
Samantha woke wearily and pondered how long she had been asleep for, for a nap it felt a lot longer, and looking at the time on her phone she realised it had been a good few hours. Guilt rushed over her, her poor baby must be starving! Turning over she wondered how tired she must of been to sleep through her cries, only to see her baby gone and she was in an empty room. "Nurse?" She called out standing up slowly but as fast as she could, noticing flowers and a box on the side of her bed she realised Fiona must of been and gone, but where was her daughter?
Just then Norman came back in quietly, their daughter cradled in his arms, relief waved over Samantha and she smiled at the pair "i thought id let you sleep, you certainly needed it after yesterday" Norman explained "has..has Fiona been?" She asked pointing to the flowers and the box on the side, Norman shook his head, placing their baby in her crib he passed them to her "they are, well from me" he shuffled with his hands in his front pockets "the least i could do" he added as she opened the box revealing a beautiful ring, a sapphire ring. Instantly putting it on her finger she felt unsure she wanted a proposal "its not an engagement ring, its a sort of, promise ring, that I'll stand by you both and one day it will become more" he explained sitting next to her on the bed. Samantha felt herself welling up, still feeling very emotional. "I have feelings for you Sam and they got stronger watching you give me a daughter and I dont want to lose you, any of you. I know i was a jerk when you told me and I was more interested in my career than you two but if you let me I'll spend the rest of my life make it up to you two" Norman added lovingly.
Samantha felt choked at his words. Her heart was racing. "Do you want to?" He asked wiping the tears from her cheek.
