How You Meet (pt. 1/2)
[A/N: Okay I know this was supposed to be the first thing I published, but my backwards self decided to do it now and move it to the front of my book so don't get confused lolz. By the way, some of these may be basic and lame as hell :)) Enjoy!~]
Luke
"Have you heard about the exchange student?"
"Yeah!"
"He's hot!"
"He is, but he's shy as hell."
As you roamed the hallways of your massive high school, all you heard was stuff about some "hot exchange student" that had just arrived to your school today. You didn't know why everyone was on the rave about him, because you'd usually suspect that everyone had different tastes; but for some reason, it looked like this new boy had everyone wrapped around his finger.
You headed into your last class for the day: your cooking class. You hated this class and everyone in it. You had no friends in here, and that was the worst part.
You sat down at your desk, and the bell rang soon after.
"Good afternoon class," your teacher, Mr. Heath, smiled as he stood up from his computer.
The class gave him a half hearted "good afternoon", which they've said thousands of times before.
"Well, I'll get started with your syllabus," he cleared his throat. "Today, you're going to be assigned a project,"
Everyone groaned except for you. You sort of liked the projects you got in here because you always got to work alone. It was an uneven number in your class, and since everyone had their best friend or significant other in there, you were always left to work alone; but you were perfectly fine with it.
"You're going to be baking any type of dessert and bringing it to class tomorrow. Make sure to bake enough so that everyone in this class period will be able to get one---if they choose,"
A girl in the back raised her hand. "Is this a partnered project?"
He nodded. "The usual."
A boy called out, "What if we just go to the store and buy some cookies or somethin'. How would you know?"
As the class snickered at the infantile class clown, you rolled your eyes.
"Great question, Braylen." Your teacher smiled sarcastically. "You will actually be recording yourself while you make the desserts of your choice."
The class groaned again; this time, you joined in.
Now I can't poison them. The sardonic thought ran through your mind. Of course you weren't serious.
"Now, you will have the rest of the class period to choose a partner and discuss the project." He concluded.
Everyone clung to one another like a child would do to their mother when they were trembling in fear. Once again, you had no partner, but like it always had been, you were fine with it.
Suddenly, the class door opened and a pale boy walked in. He had blonde hair that was tamed into a quiff, and blue eyes---which was set on Mr. Heath. You hadn't ever seen him before, so you assumed he had been the exchange guy everyone was talking about.
He handed your teacher a slip of paper. Once Mr. Heath took his slip and read it, the boy put his hands in the front pocket of his jeans nervously.
After your teacher read the paper in it's entirety, he turned to our now completely silent class.
"Class, we have a new student. An exchange student,"
All of the girls slid to the edge of their seats, simply peering at the boy. The guys in your class rolled their eyes in envy as they pretended that the boy's appearance wasn't that great, knowing that they were just plain insecure.
"His name is Luke---"
"Hi, Luke," the girls cooed.
He awkwardly waved, showing that he wasn't interested.
"Well, Luke, you can find a seat anywhere. There's a few empty desks in the back or you could sit next to Y/N, since we're doing a group project and she doesn't have a partner." you heard him whisper as he pointed to the empty seat next to you.
You felt chills crawl up from your toes, all the way to your cheeks, which were warm from all the blood rushing up there. Luke walked over and grabbed a seat next to you, sighing a little. As the class carried on with their discussion about their project, the two of you sat quietly. It took a minute or two of no eye contact and awkward tension until one of you actually spoke... and that was him.
"Hi." He said, looking over at you for the first time. "I'm Luke... but you already knew that."
You looked to your left and met eyes with him. "I'm y/n... where are you from?"
"Sydney, Australia." He replied as he lowered his eyes in sadness.
"I'm s-sorry if I triggered you or anything?"
He shook his head and chuckled lightly. "You didn't 'trigger' me," he smiled, using air quotes.
"Good,"
You began to tell him about the project that you two were going to be working on together. You both took a moment to figure out which dessert you were going to make, and lots of laughter and weird choices had been brought up in the long run.
"Cupcakes? I feel like everyone is going to make that," Luke told you in reply to your suggestion.
"Yeah. You're right," you sighed, "but it's the easiest?"
"Yeah. I guess you're right. Cupcakes it is,"
You nodded in agreement. "That's more like it."
Before you knew it, minutes had went by, and then an hour. You both had finished putting together your project, and then the bell rang.
As you got up to leave, Luke called you back.
"Y/N!"
You turned around, and Luke had given you a slip of paper.
"There's my number and my address. We can meet up at my place later for... the project,"
You took the paper in your hands as you looked at it.
"Thank you---"
You looked up noticed he was gone in the crowds of people walking outside of the school.
I can't wait...
Calum
MALL BOYYYYYYYY
You had scanned your last customer, repeating the same line you had been repeating for the last hour.
"Have a great day!"
As the customer turned to walk away, you hastily took off your striped apron with "Bath & Body Works" written across it and folded it up in your arms.
"I'm going on my lunch break!" You yelled to your manager, Brandy, as she ringed up the register.
"Okay... oh, and Y/N!"
You rolled your eyes as you spun around to face her once again.
"Don't go over thirty minutes this time,"
You reluctantly nodded and finally exited the store.
You were so happy to be out of there. It was only that half an hour of the day that you got to leave that cramped store, with the ridden smell of strong perfumes---spritzed from every corner of the room. Your favorite part of the day was your lunch break, because it was the loveliest part of your eight-hour shift.
You plugged in your earphones, listening to one of your favorite songs. As you began to dance and lose thought of everyone and everything around you, you walked right into someone.
"Oh crap, I'm so sorry!" You cringed, meeting eyes with a guy you had never met before.
"You're good," he chuckled.
He was tall, and gorgeous. He had the cutest smile, and his hair looked soft to touch. Something about him... you swore you could've seen before. But besides all of that, he had a lovely accent from somewhere you couldn't put a finger on.
You looked down at the name tag that had been pinned on his shirt.
"Calum...?" you said faintly.
"Mhm," he smiled again. "And you are?"
You stuck out your hand and he shook it. "Y/N,"
"I've never heard an accent like that before... are you from Britain?"
He laughed at your incorrect guess.
"I'm actually from Australia. I came here with my parents a few months ago and I thought getting a job would be a nice start in my new-American life... and now I work at Hot Topic in a shopping mall," he dished, grabbing a seat at a table in the dining part of the food court. You sat down with him.
"So you work just downstairs?"
He nodded. "Where do you work?"
You unfolded the scrunched up apron and showed it to him.
"Hmm... No wonder you smell so good,"
"I smell like a whole bunch of conjoined perfumes. It's a living headache,"
The two of you giggled, then slowly faded to silence.
You couldn't help yourself from smiling so much. He was so whimsical and adorable, I didn't understand how I hadn't noticed him before. You two began talking for a while, telling how your day on the job had been so far. After a while, you looked down at your watch and sighed heavily. "Aw man... I went over thirty minutes,"
As you stood up, he grabbed your hand. "Wait,"
You raised an eyebrow in reply.
"Promise you'll meet me here tomorrow? Same time?" he smiled, looking up at you like you were an angel.
"I promise," you giggled.
Mikey
"Ugh, I'm hungry," you groaned to your friend Elena (just roll wit it homies) as she typed away on her MacBook.
Silence.
"Hello?"
"What do you want to eat?" she finally answered, closing the lid of her laptop.
"Pizza."
She sat up and yawned, and grabbed the phone off her nightstand and called the nearest pizza place.
You guys were attempting to do an all nighter, but you didn't think you could go anywhere past 2 am if you didn't get some food in your system.
As she tiredly told them the order that she knew by heart, for you guys had done this a zillion times already, you played with your curly hair.
"Yeah. That's it," she said.
After being told the price and the wait time for the delivery, she hung up and snuggled back into the pile of blankets that you guys were lying on.
"Y/N... what time is it?"
You looked at your phone and sighed. "Only one... am."
"No shit, pm."
You smacked her with a pillow and she giggled.
"We still have a long while til the break of dawn and I feel like I got hit by a bus," she whined.
"You're such a wuss,"
As you guys sat there, blabbering on about useless stuff, the doorbell finally rang. You sprang up instantly, your stomach growling for food. "I'll get it!"
You ran all the way to the front door, hunger reflecting from your brown eyes.
When you opened the door, there stood a boy with red colored hair, sticking out from underneath his cap that said "Pizza Hut" on it. He smiled awkwardly, probably because you were gazing at him.
"Uh... this is the right house, right?" he said nervously.
"Oh, y-yeah sorry about that."
You took the pizzas in and sat them down, then you ran back to the front door to pay.
"Your total will be $31.92," he smiled.
You handed him the money that Elena had given to you, and he took it.
"You're really pretty,"
You turned around to see if your friend was standing behind you, because you were almost confident that he wasn't talking about you.
"Me?"
He nodded handing you your receipt.
"You should call me sometime. I-I mean if it's okay with you," he blushed.
You looked down to see his number written on the receipt.
"Of course it's okay," you winked. "See you later... uh..."
He turned around, revealing you his name tag. "Michael."
He chuckled lightly, and before he turned to walk away, he said, "Oh, and I may have eaten a slice or two of your pizza on the way over here,"
Ash
Your daughter was restless. She always wanted to touch things and run ramped wherever she was, whenever she wanted to. She was only three so you didn't blame her; she just felt like there was so much in this world that she had to see.
Her father had left when he found out that you were pregnant with her, only because he didn't want to be "tied down", or that he "wasn't ready to be a father". It tore you to pieces, and the saddest part of it all is that she would never know what her father looked like.
You were out in town, walking the streets of the city. Your daughter held onto your hand half heartedly, gazing at the lights around her. You took her here so she could get out of the house for a while; if it wasn't the house, it'd be daycare. You wanted her to branch out and see different places beside your lonely house and her crowded daycare.
As you two stopped at the cross walk,
y/d/n got restless. It was as if she couldn't stand still for a minute.
"You've had too much candy, y/d/nn," you told her.
She probably didn't hear you because she was too busy bouncing off the walls. Suddenly, she broke free of your grasps, her eyes widened and a smile on her face as she ran across the crosswalk.
"A puppy!" She squealed, dashing across.
"Y/D/N!!"
A truck was heading fast down the road, honking it's horn. You were about to run after her until you were slightly nudged out of the way by a guy running full speed at your daughter. Seconds from being roadkill, he picked her up and ran to the other side, breathing heavily.
The truck passed and as soon as it did, you bolted across the crosswalk to the man holding your baby. She was crying, holding tight onto the man.
"Oh my gosh, y/d/n, are you alright?" You gasped, as the man handed your child over to you.
She nodded, wiping her eyes.
"Thank you so much," you said to him.
"Not a problem... just be careful next time. That scared the hell out of me," he sighed.
He looked at y/d/n. "She's beautiful... just like you,"
"Thank you," you giggled shyly. "but besides all of that, I really want to thank you for saving my daughter. I don't think I could ever repay you,"
He raised an eyebrow.
"I know a way,"
"And what is that?"
"Letting me take you on a date." he grinned.
