What Comes Next?
The next day, Peggy woke up late. It took her a minuet to wonder why, and then she remembered.
John. The waltz. The end results.
What comes next? Was it just the drinks talking? Or did they force the truth out of him? And if he really did like her, she knew there would always be a part that would never belong to her.
But it felt nice. Really nice.
A giggle escaped her lips. She had her first kiss! It was wonderful, too. She had felt like a princes.
What about her sisters? When she told them, they would never let her live it down. But it would be worth it, do have someone to confide in. Peggy couldn't keep her feelings to herself, and often wondered how Angelica did it.
She got out of bed and walked down the stairs to eat something small for breakfast.
"Well look who decided to show up." Angelica smiled. For a minuet, Peggy wondered where Eliza was. Then she remembered, Eliza had her own house now.
"Father, you and I are going to visit Betsy today." Angelica reported. "Over in Harlem."
"Should we not let the newly weds have some privacy?" Peggy asked.
"On the contrary, Alexander asked us when we would like to visit as soon as the wedding was over."
Peggy didn't say anything.
"Where were you? I saw you walk out to the gardens, then you never returned until the wedding was over."
"Oh. I was just talking with John"
"Oh, I see." Angelica smirked. The sisters knew Peggy and John as friends now, but not for long.
"I am glad you enjoyed yourself."
There was a pause as Angelica prepared food for the trip.
"We kissed."
"WHAT?!" She dropped her bag and stares at her younger sister, who was blushing profoundly.
"Yes, we did."
"What was it like?!"
"Well.... It was soft."
"And?!"
"It felt nice. It was just us, there's was nothing else."
Angelica beamed. "I'm so happy for you, Peggy."
Peggy noticed a certain sadness that his in here sister's eyes. "Do not worry, Angelica. You will find someone."
She reached out to hug her sister. The hug was long and nice.
"Thank you. I just needed to regain myself."
Peggy smiled. "Let us go and get ready."
About an hour later, Philip, Angelica and Peggy pulled into the Hamilton's yard.
"Father! Peggy! Angelica!" Eliza ran out of the house to greet her family.
"Woah!" Their father yelled as Eliza nearly knocked him over with a hug. "It has been only a day." But he hugged her tightly. "A day too long."
"Come along, I'm just dying to show you the house!" Eliza grabbed her sister's hands and led them inside, where Alexander was waiting for them.
"Hello girls, Mr. Schuyler." He nodded.
"Hello Alexander." Peggy smiled.
"When are the others coming?" Eliza asked, taking her husband's hand.
"Others?" Angelica asked after greeting Alexander.
"Yes, Mulligan, Lafayette and John."
Peggy's heart gave a lurch as Angelica looked in her direction. Had she not been hit with the shock, she would have noticed Alexander refer to only Laurens using his first name.
"They will be here any minuet." Said the oblivious Alexander.
"Eliza, come show Angelica and I the yard." Peggy tugged on her sisters' hands.
"Oh! Alright." Eliza seemed surprised, but Angelica gave the youngest sister a knowing look.
"They seem eager to reunite." Philip smiled.
"You should never mess with sisters, and certainly not sisters with that strong of a bond." Alexander commented.
"What ever is the matter?" Eliza asked.
"John and I kissed." Peggy said n a hushed, rushed voice.
Eliza's reaction was similar to Angelica's. As soon as she had calmed down, Peggy confided in her sisters.
"Now what?!"
"You wait and see what will happen." Eliza offered. "I am sure he'll talk to you privately."
Peggy nodded. Her nerves were slightly eased. That is until another carriage pulled into the yard.
"Heyyyy lovebirds!" Came an all too familiar voice.
John, Mulligan and Lafayette raced up the yard to bombard Alexander and Eliza with greetings.
Soon they said hello to the sisters and their father.
"Hello, Peggy!" John smiled.
"John." Sh nodded her head.
He gave her a quizzical look. "Why so quiet?"
"Come! Let us show you around the house!" Eliza smiled.
Peggy left without offering her hand to John.
As Eliza was showing everyone the kitchen, John tried to talk to Peggy again. "Peggy, what's the matter?"
"John, do you remember anything about last night?"
He laughed. "Not a thing. Except..." His brow furrowed. "I was in the gardens... And something happened. That's about all."
Peggy bit her lip. "Well... Funny story..."
"Come, our bedroom is simply divine!" Eliza smiled as Alexander laughed. Everyone walked up the stairs, except for John and Peggy.
"Well?" John asked.
"Um..." Peggy didn't know how to tell him. She figured just saying it would help.
"We were standing in the gardens... And we started to dance.... And we ended up a lot closer than before... When the dance was over. And we.... Well we..."
John raised an eyebrow.
"We kissed." Peggy finished.
John's eyes widened. "We- what- how-"
"I just told you how, John. But it is ok, I understand if you didn't really mean it."
She began to walk away.
"Wait! I did mean it... Sort of."
Peggy turned around.
"Peggy... I look at you the same way I look at- I mean, your sister looks at Alexander."
Which one? Peggy thought.
"I do think you are beautiful, and amazing at dancing." John continued. "Maybe all of my heart won't go all out to you, but a good amount of it will, and that works for me."
Peggy nodded. "It works for me, too." She smiled.
John's face lit up. "Really?"
"Really."
They laughed and took each other's hands, walking upstairs. As they joined the rest of their group, Eliza and Angelica noticed Peggy holding John's hand and smiled. It seemed as if everything was at peace, for now.
