Chapter 5~ "If x=5 then would you like to go on a date with me?"

"No just make the sum not solve it." I explain to Jamie.
Right now we are in the library during 5th period since we both have a free. We are studying algebra 1 first but Jamie isn't really paying attention. I feel like his mind is everywhere else except his math book.
"Okay Jamie, you need to concentrate or you'll be lucky with a D-." I say clicking my fingers in front of Jamie.
"Sorry. I-I'm sorry. I'll focus."
"Thank you. Okay if it tells you what the variables are then it makes it a hell of a lot easier. So solve this equation. If x=5 then what is x+3?" I ask.
He doesn't answer for about 2 minutes and I tilt my head back in frustration.
"Jamie this is 8th grade stuff. 1st grade actually. Replace the x with 5 and rewrite the equation and it makes it easier. It's 5+3."
"What is it?" I ask.
"8"
"Okay so the keyword is replace. Just replace the variable with the number."
"What if the variable doesn't have a number like it's just x plus 3?" Jamie asks me.
"Well you can't add it but you can multiply it so it just becomes 3x."
"Then what if it's 3x by x?"
"It becomes 3x squared. You know the little 2 at the top of a number. It doesn't mean multiply by 2 it means double the number it's on top of so 3 squared isn't 6 it's 9. You understand?"
"I do. So if x=5 then would you like to go on a date with me?" He asks.
I look at him with wide eyes wearing a shocked expression.
"I-I-um," I begin to speak but the bell signalling last period rings.
I gather up all my books and pick up my back pack.
"So, what do you say?" Jamie asks.
"I-um, sure." I agree.
A huge smile lights up his face and he picks up his back pack and slings it around his shoulder.
"Okay, cool, I'll text you later."
"Perfect. Can't wait." I smile.
He walks out of the library and I sit back down at put my head in my hands.
"What have I gotten myself into?" I say to myself.
Jamie is an amazing guy, he is great and he's super hot but he's Caseys best friend and there's definitely something that feels like we should just be friends.
I only agreed because maybe things could work out but I'll never know unless I try.
"Okay, this will work." I say to myself.
I stand up and flatten my cheerleading skirt.
I pick up my books and walk over to my locker before going out to the football field.
Last period every Monday and Wednesday, the cheer squad practice along side the football players and then on Tuesday and Thursday we practice after school.
I run out to the field and throw my bag on the bleachers and begin to stretch and wait for Holly to come out.
Only a few of the girls are here and we just stretch while the other girls show up.
"Okay so either Jamie really likes algebra or you two totally made out." Holly says throwing her bag down and stretching beside me.
"Uhhh, I wish. He asked me out." I say.
"He asked you out?" I nod.
"I don't know whether that's good or bad because Jamie is super hot but he's also your friend."
"I said yes and I'm excited." I convince myself.
"I can tell." Holly says sarcastically.
"Whats the problem Em?"
"I don't know. Honestly, I have no clue. Jamie is amazing. He's sweet and nice and cute but it just feels wrong." I shiver.
"Because you like his best friend?" Holly asks me.
"Casey? Me? Me like Casey? What?" I say in a high pitched voice.
"Emily I'm your best friend. I know who you like and who you dislike."
"Enlighten me then."
"You hate Amber Banks, Katie Colene and stereotypes. You like, candy, pizza and everything else in the food pyramid , and you like Casey."
"I do. A lot. Ever since the first grade." I sit down on the bleachers and put my head in my hands.
"And that's why you go out with Jamie. You need to move on Emily. You know you and Casey are better as friends."
"You're right. I'll go out with Jamie and I'll have a good time. Maybe things could work with us and I'll move on from Casey."
"And then we can go on double dates with you and Jamie and me and Seth."
"That is if he doesn't go missing again." I tease and she hits her knee of mine playfully making me laugh.
"I love you Em." She says leaning her head on my shoulder.
"I love you too Holls. I know me and Casey are best friends but I'd be lost without you." I say.
"I know you would. You'd need a map to get around." She jokes.
Couch Leah shows up and makes us all gather around.
"Okay girls, I'm going to tell you who will be at the top and bottom of the pyramid and then I'll leave you in the capable hands of your captain."
"Okay at the base will be Sarah, Cody, Bella, Lucy and Nieve. On top is Alison, Penny, Haley and Claudia. Then, Ashley, Holly and Ava and our flyer is Emily as usual." She explains.
"Eh, Leah, where am I?" Amber asks.
"You're a spotter and so is Katie and Chloe." Then she walks off.
"Spotter?" Amber yells.
"I'm a freaking spotter?"
"Okay girls, make the pyramid and catchers be ready to catch Emily." Holly says.
The girls get into their positions and I prepare to get onto the top.
Whenever I finally got to the top and feel secure by my friends, I throw my arms up and balance on one foot.
"Looking good Em." Casey calls from the field sticking up his thumb. I smile at him in return.
I take a deep breath ready to fall and when I'm in mid air, I notice from the corner of my eye Amber and Katie moving away.
I hit the ground with a bang and I notice poor Chloe beside me lying on the ground.
She jumps up and begins to apologise instantly.
"Emily, I'm so sorry. I couldn't handle the pressure of you coming down on my own." She apologises.
"Don't worry about it Chlo." I go to stand up but fall back down on my bum.
"Em are you okay?" Casey asks coming over to me and kneeling down in front of me with Holly behind him and Jamie and Seth beside him.
I go to stand up again but I can't put pressure on my ankle.
"I think my ankles broken." I say.

Amber in this one for a tiny bit but don't worry, she'll be in this a lot.
