Chapter Three
-Chapter Three-
We sit around my bedroom and they tell me all about everything. Like, before they were famous, how they all tried out at X-Factor as soloist to my dad, how Liam tried out two years before the other guys, and none of them made it far enough so my dad put them together, and how they are living the best life anyone could ask for. They tell me how they spend months and months on the road together, and that they barely get any time to themselves.
“You guys don’t get tired of each other?” I ask, fascinated. If I was put in a band, with four other strangers, and have to get to know them, so we could travel together, uninterrupted, for months, I would go insane.
“No, we don’t go home much, so we basically became brothers. If someone told me, the day I tried out, that I would travel the world with four of the best men on earth, I would think that they were mad. I couldn’t live without them now, they are all a part of my life now.” Zayn says, looking between his bandmates.
“So you don’t see your family often? I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t be home. My dad is annoying, I know, but I would still miss him.” I say and look around at the boys, laying on my floor and bed. I am sitting on the black, three seater, leather, couch in my bedroom. “You are the biggest boy band in the world and I know nothing about you. Do you guys have that special girl back home?”
“No. Actually, some of us were in relationships but they didn’t work out with all the distance. It’s hard with our career.” Harry says for all the boys. Honestly I am shocked. They are all great guys, for all I know, and it’s hard for them to have girlfriends. It’s sad. I nod and look down a bit.
“Enough about us for now. Tell us the story of your life, love.” Louis says with a smile. They all smile and laugh as if there was a joke but, of course, I don’t get it. They all watch me with encouraging eyes.
“Well, the day I was born, my mother, she got really sick. They said we were going to die. She told the doctors not to save her if it will kill me. So, the doctors performed a C-section on her, and I was born 6 months premature, but lucky I was completely fine, just a little small. But, as soon as I took my first breath in this world, my mother took her last. I grew up with only my famous father, who was basically never around. He would be working. I would travel him a lot. But he was always working, so I stayed in hotels or if he was on those TV shows, I would stay in his dressing room with his hair and makeup lady.”
I pause and look around to see the boys fully captivated by my story, so I decide to continue on.
“I grew up with no friends. And, I still don’t really have friends. If I had a friend, they only wanted to get to my father. I gave up on the whole friendship thing and stayed alone, a lot. I got homeschooled so that didn’t help with my friend issue. My dad still worked a lot. I didn’t see him. As soon as I turned 14 he thought I was old enough to stay by myself, so once again, I was alone. Until he met Lauren. I hated her at first, I felt like she was trying to replace my mother and that she only wanted my father for the fame. But, as I got to know her I realized that those things weren’t her intention, and I ended up loving her. She would stay home with me about 95% of the time. It was nice to have someone like a mother figure in my life after all those years. Lauren became my, one and only, friend. She meant more to me than any friend could, actually.”
I pause and look down to the pillow, in my cross legged lap, and begin to twirl the strings on the end of the white pillow. I learn deeper into the leather couch before I continue.
“When I turned 16, my father starting working more from home. I got to see him more and start to build an actual father-daughter relationship with him. As you can probably tell, we still don’t have the best relationship, but it is so much better than it used to be. I know it got better because of Lauren. She has helped me so much, by helping my father get over the loss of my mother, and taking care of me. She is the nicest, most caring, person I know. Now, I guess I am just me.”
I finally finish and look up to see the boys looking at me with wide eyes, just like how I first met them. I nervously bite at my bottom lip as I wait for their reaction.
“Wow, Victoria. I don’t know what to say.” Niall finally says as he notices that no one else will speak. I look back down at the pillow. I have never told anyone my whole story, other than Lauren. I don’t realize that I zoned out until Niall’s voice brings me back again. “I know it was really hard telling us, but I am glad you did. And I want you to know, that we are your friends. We are here for you.”
Niall gets up from my bed and walks over and sits in the empty space next to me. He pulls me into a tight hug and I smile. I have friends now. It’s the best feeling. I don’t even know how to explain it in any other way than that. I don’t have just one, I have five. I can’t stop the small tear that falls from my cheek.
“Don’t cry, babe, we’re here.” Niall’s voice soothes me as his arms tighten around me. He gives me one last squeeze before he pulls back to see my face. I look over at the other boys who are sprawled out on the floor. They are all watching me and Niall. They nod, agreeing with all of Niall’s words.
“We are definitely here for you, Victoria.” Harry says and Liam, Zayn, and Louis agree with “yeah” and “of course.” They are all next to me and pull me into a big hug. Louis jumps causing us to all fall from the couch. Of course, I land on the bottom.
“Guys. I. Cant. Breathe.” I say in between pants of air. The weight slowly starts to decrease until Liam is the last one to get off of me. He reaches down and helps me up with his hand. “Thanks Liam.” I say with a smile. It’s quite for a moment as we all search the room for something none of us seem to be able to find.
“Well, what do you want to do know? I mean it is almost 9 o’clock.” I say looking at my phone. I didn’t realize that today went by so quickly. After meeting with my father, and now the boys, time has flown right past me.
“We could put in a movie, yeah?” Zayn asks, pointing to my television. I look between the boys who nod along with a smile.
“I don’t have many movies. Maybe Zayn and I could run to rent one?” I suggest. Zayn smiles at me and I return the gesture.
“We could probably pick up snacks too.” Zayn says and looks at me for permission. I nod in agreement.
“Why can’t we all come?” Harry asks with a look of confusion written on his face.
“Well, I don’t think you would all come to an agreement. And if you did, it would probably take hours. Plus, Zayn suggested the movie so he should come.” I concisely explain. Harry looks down but nods in understanding.
“What’ll we do while you guys are gone?” Louis asks. He seems the one who always needs to be doing something, or gets bored often. Those people are always so fun.
“You can talk to Lauren, and get a bunch of pillows and blankets to build a fort to watch the movie in.” I tell him. His smile brightens at the end and I laugh. “Does that sound alright?” I ask the child of Louis in front of me.
“Of course it is! I love forts!” He claims and beams at me. Harry, Liam, and Niall all groan and I laugh. I take a side glance at Zayn to see his eyes already on me. His smile grows and I grin like an idiot I am. He points his thumb at the door and I nod. As I’m about to walk out, a voice stops me.
“Wait!” Harry calls, panicked. I turn to see his eyes wide as he quickly walks over to me. When he reaches me, he still hasn’t spoken. He places an arms around my shoulder, and I give him a confused glance. He leads me back into the middle of the room where I stood moments ago. “We didn’t vote on what type of movie you are going to pick up.”
Zayn groans and he walks back into the bedroom. I raise my eyebrows and look back at the arm around my shoulder. Harry nods and his arm slowly falls as he gets the memo.
“I say Toy Story.” Liam says and Niall groans.
“You have got be kidding me, Liam. We watch that every week.” Louis says and I laugh. “So, I say horror.” He finishes and I choke on air. No way am I doing that. I do not do scary. End of story. Niall pats my back as I continue my choking fit.
“You okay there?” Niall asks me, sweetly. I give him a small thumbs up and I finally get control over my coughing fit.
“Oh, just dandy.” I finally say and Niall laughs.
“Okay good.” He says and I smile. “But, I vote horror as well.”
“I agree.” Zayn says.
“Looks like you are going to pick up horror.” Harry says to me. They want to torture me don’t they? Bastards.
“Let’s go then.” Zayn says, pulling me from the room when I don’t speak or move. Zayn continues to pull me by my wrist and when we get down stairs, Lauren and Dad are sitting on the couch, in deep conversation. My dad looks up at me and glares at Zayn when he sees my wrist in Zayn’s hand. Zayn’s grip instantly disappears.
“What are you doing?” My dad says, grumpily.
“We are going to go pick up a movie.” I say and walk over to the key rack in the kitchen.
“Only you two?” My father states the obvious.
“Yeah. If I brought all of them, we would be there for hours as they fought over what movie.” I say and pick up my keys. I walk back over to Zayn who hasn’t moved an inch. “Let’s go.”
