It's Time
"Um. Karlie. I think it might be time." Taylor said, holding her stomach.
"Oh you mean like time time? It's like a week earlier that's not too early though right? He'll probably be okay you think?" Karlie said, panic obvious in her voice.
"Kar. Babies are born a week early all the time. It's probably more common than babies being born on time." Taylor reassured her frantic wife.
"Okay. You're right. Let me get the bag." Karlie said, referring to the bag they'd packed a few days earlier in preparation for the day.
"Okay. Let's do this. Let's have a baby." Karlie smiled, kissing her wife lightly.
"Let's do it." Taylor agreed as they headed to the car.
"So how fair apart are the contractions?" Karlie asked on the way to the hospital.
"I don't know babe, a few minutes." Taylor said, suddenly inhaling sharply.
"Okay. Breathe. You got this." Karlie attempted to comfort the blonde.
"Breathing. Yes. Got it." Taylor replied, slowly breathing in and out.
The rest of the cat ride continued similarly, Karlie helping Taylor breathe and asking questions as they both panicked a little bit.
"Hello ma'am I'm guessing you're having a baby?" The woman behind the counter asked.
"Yes we are. Right now in fact." Karlie said, letting out a nervous laugh.
"Okay well let me a wheelchair and I'll take you up to the mother/baby floor." She smiled, waking around to get the wheelchair.
"Thank you." Taylor said before grabbing her stomach, launching Karlie back into their breathing exercises.
"Alright here we go." The older woman said, pushing Taylor into the elevator.
They quickly ascended a few floors before the elevator dinged, signaling that they had reached their destination.
"Hey Dan these lovely ladies are having baby, are you free to take another patient?" She smiled at a young nurse as they arrived.
"I am free actually, only one patient at the moment and she's just finished so let's do this." He replied.
"Okay great, I've gotta go back downstairs, lots of sick people to attend to but good luck you two. Congrats." She said, turning to head back down the elevator.
"Thanks." They said in unison before turning to Dan.
"Well as I'm sure you heard I'm Dan, and while I do know your names it's customary to ask." He smiled.
"Well I'm Taylor and this is my wife Karlie." Taylor smiled, happy to have an almost normal moment with other people, it happened often in hospitals because they're not allowed to react crazily to her being there.
"Nice to meet you both, let's go have a baby." He replied, shaking both of their hands before beginning to push Taylor.
"So about how far apart are the contractions? It's fine if you don't know, we just like to ask." He explained.
"A few minutes, like five at the most." Taylor said, reaching her hand up to entangle it with Karlie's.
"Well that's good, should be enough time for an epidural if you want to go that route." He said as they reached the room.
"Oh that's great news. I was worried about being too late." Taylor replied, happy to do almost anything to make this less painful.
"It's a week before his due date that's not too early is it? Like lots of babies are born a week early?" Karlie asked him, trying not to sound too panicked.
"Yes lots of babies are born a week early, your little guy should be just fine but let's get the doctor in here to confirm." He smiled, stepping outside to flag down the doctor.
"Hello ladies I'm Dr. Sullivan and I'm here to make sure everything goes as smoothly as it can." A middle aged woman smiled as she shook both girl's hands.
"I'm Taylor."
"Karlie." They replied, respectively.
"Well let's get you in a hospital gown and in the bed so I can check everything out." She said.
They carefully changed Taylor into the gown and helped her into the bed so the doctor could do her thing.
"Okay so first, I need to see how dilated you are. This part is no fun but to be honest, not the worst part." She helped Taylor's legs into the stirrups and beginning her exam.
"Okay so you're only about three centimeters so you still have time for epidural, Dan said you wanted to go that way." She confirmed.
"Not to interrupt but I really need to call the parents so I'm going to step out real quick okay Taylor? You okay?" Karlie interjected, knowing their families would be mad if she didn't say.
"Yeah, tell them I said hey. Don't stay too long." Taylor laughed at the end, half joking.
"I won't." Karlie stepped outside to make the calls.
"Alright well let me start a sonogram so I can check on your little boy and make sure everything is normal. This'll be pretty cold of course." She said, squeezing the gel onto her stomach. She quickly but gently placed the machine on the gel, rubbing it around. She didn't speak at first, concentrating on checking up on the baby.
"What'd I miss?" Karlie said, lacing quickly called all family and texting friends.
"You're interrupting the doctors work babe." Taylor laughed.
"Oh I'm so sorry." Karlie apologized, looking up at their baby.
"Oh you're fine, just like your son is by the way. He looks perfectly healthy, well developed and everything." She confirmed.
"He looks perfect." Karlie smiled.
"He does, now let me get you that epidural. I want to do it while we've got time." The doctor, as gently as possible, gave Taylor the injection while the girl squeezed Karlie's hand.
"You're all set. Now it's the waiting game, I'll be back in a few minutes." The doctor smiled, leaving to go check on other patients.
"Well, we're having a baby." Taylor announced, smiling.
"We're having a baby." Karlie confirmed, her smile growing to match Taylor's.
